Geocities is closing down forever on 26 October 2009.

If you have anything on Geocities you MUST save it NOW or permanently lose it.

Please pass this on to anyone that may not know Geocities is permanently being closed.

I'm sure any mildly intelligent person who plays this will be able to figure it out for themselves. ;)

You are correct. But mildly intelligent people often forget things until it is too late. VERY soon it will be too late, so this is a wake up call for all of those who did not know or forgot about it.

Wow, I thought they were a massive internet company... I've never used them but it's interesting that they are shutting down.

At one time it was "The Place" to post free content. It has been going downhill ever since Yahoo bought it years ago.

I see that Yahoo is now promoting Facebook on their main page, so I guess that is why Geocities is shutting down.

For anyone needing to save files:

Go to your Geocities file manager. Right click "View" for the file you want to save. Click "Save link as ..."

FYI you can no longer get to Geocities through the Yahoo interface. You must go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/gcp/home.php and navigate to your file manager from there.

Truly the end of an era. Geocities was the first free web host provider, if I recall correctly. It was THE place to be.

I never created a website on that or stored any info. I know a few dozen websites hosted by that. :(

So sad to see it go.

Pretty much everyone has had their own little, tiny, generally poor quality website hosted on Geocities (Or a later site that gave free hosting, an idea inspired from Geocities.) It's sad to see all the sites will go, since a lot of them are cheap novelty sites from when we were (technologically) young. Darn.

Why are they closing?

Bankrupt or something?
