Dell launches a UK campaign this week as part of a new global strategy to target small and medium businesses using local ‘heroes’.

The “Take Your Own Path” campaign will feature UK business entrepreneurs including Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler and Innocent Drinks co-founder Richard Reed.

Paul-Henri Ferrand, Dell VP of global marketing and strategy for small and medium business, says in recent times it has focused on transactional-focused marketing to create demand.

The first phase of the new campaign, created by Enfatico, will focus on driving “brand consideration”, followed by marketing Dell as the “brand of choice”.

Other UK brand ambassadors to appear in its advertising are Mark Gerhard, chief executive of independent games developer Jagex; Juliet Davenport CEO of Good Energy Group which develops the demand and supply of renewable energy across Europe; and Martin Port, MD of Masternaut, a provider of vehicle tracking and mobile resource management.

“We’ve selected Dell customers who are well known in the market for what they’ve achieved. These are real entrepreneurs who have achieved impossible things and are telling the world how Dell has helped them fulfil their dreams,” he says.

The technology company will launch press and outdoor ads as well as social media activity. It will drive customers onto a website to encourage them to share their own stories about how Dell products have helped them in their businesses.

The campaign has also rolled out in markets including the US, Japan, China, France, Canada and India.

It will run alongside existing transaction-focused marketing activity.

Mark Gerhard, Trailblazer

How It All Started

Mark Gerhard has always had a deep love of technology and gaming, and has held executive positions in companies ranging from IT services to lottery security. It was while he was Principal Security Architect responsible for the National Lottery that he became fascinated by Jagex, the creators of the online fantasy game RuneScape. He knew he had to join the company.

“I really thought I was already at the sharp end of technology but joining Jagex showed me there was still a whole lot more to learn."

A year later, he had become CEO with a vision to build on Jagex’s phenomenal success as the UK’s largest independent games developer and publisher, and take it forward into exciting new R&D projects.

A World Record Game Needs a World Class Infrastructure

RuneScape is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world’s most popular free massively multi-player online role-playing game (that’s MMORPG to gamers). With over 10 million active players around the globe, RuneScape is a true 24/7 business which simply can’t afford a minute’s downtime.

“We’ve got tons of different pieces of technology working together on RuneScape and a few hundred thousand people playing it at any one time, all over the world. A moment of downtime means we’ve got hundreds of thousands of very angry people! We don’t get to do planned maintenance; we can’t switch our servers off at 3am on a Sunday morning.”

With over 200 servers running the world of RuneScape, Mark needs an utterly reliable and truly global server provider.

“We use Dell servers for our entire public infrastructure. They host all our games, websites and forums, and we also use them internally for our own file servers, databases servers and mail servers. We use Dell exclusively because we want one vendor to provide us with everything worldwide. I want to be able to say ‘I need these servers and these firewalls in this location in seven days time.’ Dell does that.”

“Oh, one other thing about our Dell servers, we hardly ever re-boot them”, “our forums server, which is also one of the biggest in the world, has not been restarted in years.”

Stopping Gamers Going Elsewhere

Jagex is a highly complex and exceptionally busy operation, so support beyond the call of duty is critical for Mark Gerhard.

“We get great service from Dell. It’s best described as 'enterprise service’ as in we’re really important – well, we get to feel that way! But it’s absolutely imperative to us because if we don’t provide good service to our players, they go and play some other game. We’re about player retention and building a community, and we expect our suppliers to help us achieve that.”

Keep Your Roots

Great challenges lie ahead for Mark Gerhard and Jagex as RuneScape continues to evolve and other games are born, but he recognises the need to not let success change the nature of the company. It’s something he feels is integral to the game plan of any budding entrepreneur.

“We’re not a classic ‘corporate company’. I think we’re successful because of our passion for technology and games. Don’t become a big corporate behemoth but keep to your roots.”

Heard a report of a billboard featuring Gerhard as part of the Dell campaign. Anyone seen one?

Andrew Gower is the true wizard of Java magicks. Mark is just his little imp, running around and yelling at people what to do, while poking at them with a Zamorakian spear.

All they need to add to their billboard is

"Monsters, Demons and a whingy community. Enemies we defy everyday."

Stop being so godamn against the community, it's not that bad. Better than a lot of other gaming communitys.

Maybe Andrew didn't want to? ^.-

I think Andrew would rather sit down and work in the background doing what he loves to do rather then prance around doing PR stuff which MMG loves to do apparently. Since he is working on SD atm I wouldn't mind him working hard. ;-P

2 questions:

Then how good is it?
What other bad gaming communities?
MC
The thing is, with the RuneScape community, at least on the forums, it's a biased sample. Most people who play RuneScape know that the forums are mostly whiny people who hate everything Jagex does and complain, and then complain if it's changed back, etcetera. Thus, "normal" players don't go there, which populates the forums only with "bad" players.

Now, in game, you find your normal mix of dicks and nice people. You'll find similar ratios on WoW, forums, or anywhere that enables anonymous interaction, especially anonymous interaction with an element of competitiveness (See PKing.)

It's pretty good, ^MC's post.

Other bad communities..eh, most. WoW's, xbox live, PSN. They are all pretty terrible.

Obviously there are jerks in every game. The larger the game, the more likely you are to run across one. Only small games can have anything approaching a perfect community. Like today, I was at Dust Devils and a level 138 kept stealing my kills and saying "wow, saddd". That got me steamed...ugh, you have no idea. But that's a single incident - I've had only a handful in my six years of play. The RS community may be unusually whiny, and occasionally cruel, but let's be honest - they have an unusual amount to stuff to legitimately whine about. And it's probably for the best that I don't take so much pride in my pixels.
