Pretty amazing, though I've always wondered how they know what is 100,000 light years away and such?

We are able to look around 80 billion light years out. :o But we will be able to see more and more, and hopefully we will be able to see back to the start of time. :P

Two methods, the first is called the parrallax shift but this is only accurate for stars within a hundred light years. The parrallax shift measures the visual shift of the star as viewed from Earth, the larger the shift the closer the star.
Beyond 100 lightyears the brightness of the star is measured over a period of time to find the true brightness, comparing the apparent and true brightness allows astronomers to calculate it's distance from earth.

Makes you wonder about how vast and beautiful the universe is.

Wow. I'm still blown away at how we have machines that can see that far away whereas I can barely see something small across a football field.

I remember seeing this exact video in science a few years ago. Still think it's pretty awesome!
Technology never ceases to amaze me.

side note: interesting vid, I was half expecting it to start back at 100 million light years after going in so close.
