Welcome to Mechscape World.

I'm going to say no, It won't be like Star Wars. I think they'll try to stay away from that as much as possible.
I would think there might be some similarity's, but none directly that you'd notice that was from Star Wars.
Although I think the desert concept art and poster look like Star Wars a bit.

I think you should read sarcasm
I really doubt it'll be like star wars, because it's a massive stereotype that Jagex will be wanting to move away from, as equally as they want to do with runescape in space.

I'm betting that it won't be a RTS, I think the "bases" will be similar to Player Owned Houses in Runescape. I'm hoping for a very good mix of things from all of the different Sci-Fi movies, games and novels. I don't think that they should copy anything, but having aspects of Star Wars (like having a Galactic Civil War going on, or having something similar to "the Force") and other Sci-Fi sources would be awesome.

I've noticed a similarity to Star Wars in the Pliigi.
If you haven't read the 'Star Wars: New Jedi Order' books there is a race in them called the Yuuzhan Vong. They have a hatred for technology and everything they use is organic. The Pliigi are similar as they use organics.

Given the vast scope of Star Wars, to steer entirely clear of it would be impossible.

I think that there would be some similarity to star wars and other sci-fi movies/stories/video games, though it would be tied into the story line so well that you wouldn't think that they had directly stolen it off star wars. I expect to see some places that look familiar to places from Star wars and some other stuff, but not too much as it greatly resembles star wars or something else from the sci-fi genre.

Exactly, to steer entirely clear of Star Wars would mean to not have space ships, planets, or an evil empire of any sort. There couldn't be any laser weapons, nor could there be light sabers, and there couldn't be any creatures that resemble any Star Wars creatures. I think it would be impossible to not have something in MS/SD that reminds me of Star Wars. That's like having Runescape without having anything similar to Lord of the Rings.

If you just mean lasers in general, then we've had them in real life for many years. Y'know when you're out shopping and you pass your stuff over the checkout? When it bleeps it means the barcode has been scanned, most likely by a small laser.

When I say "lasers", I'm referring to the phew phew lasers that make things blow up. My whole point is that there will be similarities, no matter how hard they try to not have similarities. I'm sure Jagex didn't want to copy Lord of the Rings in Runescape, but as you can see, Runescape would not exist without ideas taken from Lord of the Rings. Star Wars will have a major influence on anything sci-fi, since it is probably the most popular sci-fi movie series ever made.

Yeah, it was based on the period of time when there were dragons and dwarves and elves too right? My point is that Runescape was undeniably influenced by Lord of the Rings and countless other sources. Mechscape will be the same, Star Wars, Star Trek, and other Sci-Fi sources will influence it.

Yeah, and I suppose there were fire-breathing dragons and elves in real medevil times. All those legends of dragons, elves, etc. are VERY old. There is nothing anywhere near recent that has invented those creatures, just different variations of them. If you look at Legolas is the Lord of the Rings, he's a tall man with long white hair who can walk on top of snow. In RuneScape, they're just like humans except they hit high with bows. It's the same with dragons, too. Also, nobody invented dwarves because being a dwarf is often genetic.

Star wars was successful because it showed a girtty reality in its universe. The contrast of the planets. If you remove the jedi then yes I think it shall have a place like tatooine and coruscant in it. Many pre starwars things had space in them but people lived in this. SD is focused around the planets like pirates and ships are focused around the ports. The boring bit for pirates is when they are actually sailing so I think the boring bit aka space in SD shall be mainly cut out as we can see. I think space was one of the reasons MS was scrapped because it looked frankly rubbish...
