Hmm... interesting, to be honest i thought if they'd have done this they'd have don it sooner - well now that they have it's obvious they are intending on using it soon! =]

Maybe they are planing on doing something with the mechscape domain names? Or they just got so popular they don't want people buying them once they expire and make scam sites and what not.

When it says "updated today" that means when the whois database was updated, not the domain itself.

They are obviously going to keep them. If they don't, they'll become StellarDawn scamming sites for sure.

Yeah, which is when the WHOIS information was updated. The information gets updated whenever someone looks it up. Do you really think you would happened to check the WHOIS database a second after it was updated? The "last updated x amount of time ago" message has no connection to StellarDawn.com
