Nintendo started its fiscal 2010 year off on a sour note, reporting in July that profits plummeted 60 percent on revenues down 40 percent during its April-June quarter. Still, it's hard to argue with earnings of $2.66 billion and income of $442 million during a three-month stretch, not to mention the publisher's skyward trajectory since 2004, when it launched the 100-million-unit-plus selling Nintendo DS.

Flame-spitting hot rods for everyone!
In recognition of Nintendo's performance, BusinessWeek has placed the publisher at the top of its World's Best Companies 2009 list. BusinessWeek's rankings are compiled by management consulting firm A.T. Kearney, who sifted through the 2,500 largest publicly traded companies with a minimum of $10 billion in sales during 2008, 25 percent of which came from outside the home market. Companies were then ranked according to sales growth and value creation over the past five years.

A.T. Kearney valued Nintendo's 2008 annual sales at $16.8 billon, up 35.7 percent since 2004, when the publisher's GameCube struggled against Sony's best-selling PlayStation 2. As for value creation, which BusinessWeek defined as "the rise of market capitalization after subtracting any increase in capital," Nintendo has seen growth of 38.1 percent over the past five years.

"With visionary leadership and a three-tiered product development process that brings together top management, development staff, and marketing and administrative teams, the Japanese game maker been able to create new hardware without sticking to conventional notions in the video game industry," BusinessWeek wrote of the company.

Nintendo outpaced a number of other notable companies to secure the top spot in BusinessWeek's rankings. Google and Apple placed a respective second and third behind Nintendo, with South Korean construction products & services and shipbuilder Doosan Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries placing a respective fourth and fifth.

I had to scoff at this. While I enjoy my Wii and DS, I don't think they deserve this. I've had crappy customer support, and a myriad of other problems with Nintendo, I can say without a doubt, whoever put Nintendo at #1 had to be high. Wow, is all I can really say...

(Google should of gotten number one, if you ask me.)

What are your thoughts on this? You feel good for Nintendo, or do you think they don't even deserve top 100?

Yo, Nintendo.
I'm really happy for you and Immuh let you finish but Google had one of the best companies of all time.

ALL TIME.

Eh, I couldn't say if Nintendo deserved it or not, I just buy their Zelda and Metroid games.

(Just clarifying, that wasn't a jab at Gandaf. I chose Google because it was runner up.)

Old Nintendo was win. N64 and Gameboy colour were great.

Nintendo customer service is win though. And they build their systems extremely well, imho.

My wii broke (last month, because of playing burnt discs) on it. I bought it the day the wiis came out. Nintendo was nice enough to pay for shipping both ways, and fix it for free as well. And even extended my warranty another year.

Yes, they're games aren't as good anymore, but theres nothing wrong with this.

I'm guessing they only got it because the Wii sold so much and they gained so much value. For gamers, not so much. Who likes anti-idiot cyberarz being raped codes and a non-existant or poorly made Online mode for almost all games, especially Super Smash Bros Brawl? No ranking, random matches how we want it or lag free play?
ArmCannon
Nintendo has made some lasting memories for me, but I'm not sure I'd call them one of the best companies ever. I have nothing against them, but then again, my Wii doesn't work right now...

So...

Nintendo. You. Me. In the park after school. We fight to the death. devil.gif

Lulz, when my DS Wifi was screwing up, I called customer support. He was impatient and cussed several times. I was scared to be on the phone with him...

Nope, they're just as good. Besides the Wii Fit crap they put out. Super Mario Galaxy, great! The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, great!
Plenty more they make plenty of good games.

Just today I overheard an argument where one XBox Fan was arguing about how XBox is education from your grammer spleling and compared to Nintendo.

Rofl.

Anyways, Nintendo is quite a good company - R.O.B., though a failure, helped "save" games for North America. Also, they make good games. I just wish that weird guy didn't fail at representing Nintendo at E3. "Can a new, edgier game be coming from us? The answer - Absolutely." That guy was just fucking creepy.

Anyways, Nintendo is trying to make money. That means that they are going to market at an audience that the public thinks that the 360 and PS3 pays no attention to - Children. But you've got GTA: Chinatown Wars, No More Heroes, The Conduit, Metroid Prime 3 (inb4halo), Mad World, Red Steel, a bunch of violent games for Wii. Zelda, Brawl, that Marble Game that I can't pronounce, heck, even Wii Sports are all fun games for the Wii. People get to caught up over the hype of Graphics and Motion Control and Violence that they use that to determine the fun of a game than the gameplay. Just as long as they don't have a shiny yellow character over a blue background, or some other eye-hurting combination of colors, then I don't mind the game, as long as it is fun.

Anyways, that being said, that doesn't mean I don't have fun on Xbox, PlayStation, or other consoles. People buy consoles that have their favorite games. People buy consoles they have more use for, or consoles they think will be more fun. I'm not going to go "OMFG U FAG WII PWNS 360 SUX LOLOL", because it's a matter of opinion. I'm sure that you learned in school the difference from Opinion and Fact, no?

Ugggg, this will only encourage them! I used to be a huge fan of Nintendo and I only bought Nintendo products. Now, they couldn't care less about their fanbase. They use the ridiculous friend-code system, refuse to update the Wii's software functions, don't utilize the Wii's hardware potential, allow such crap 3rd party games to dominate the DS and Wii's game library, and come up with clever ways to waste resources on making stupid things like the DSi.

Nintendo has become an awful company. Sure they make good Mario and other 1st party games, but when we ask for hardcore games, they give us a new Wii-fit... When we say we'd like to see another more challenging Zelda, they say it will be easier than ever.

Nintendo ignores fans, gives the Wii a bad name, and shames itself on a regular basis. They couldn't deserve this award less.

With all that being said, I'm still a Wii-player...

Were getting the New Super Mario Bros. This November and well it's hard supposedly.
It's true though, they release too much casual crap but the 1st party titles (Mario, Metroid, Zelda) are enough to make me think they deserve it.
