QUOTE (Mod Anna W)
Ronitopp asks:
I read somewhere that you are going to release RuneScape: Finnish. Is this true?
and
Ellwell asks:
What future Languages do you hope to release?

We have not finalised any plans regarding the next language yet. We prefer to keep our options open and support our choice with market research data. Localisation is an expensive and time-consuming process; therefore, we need to make sure we get it right. Seeing how many players have been asking for their own language, we think that it is about time for everyone to learn Esperanto! That would make things a lot easier for us.

This shows that something about Esperanto is important. Seeing as a person with no obvious connection with MechScape mentions Esperanto, of all the languages she could have chosen (after all, English would have been a much better business choice).

For those who do not know, Pliigi and Mortigua (sp?) are both words in Esperanto, a language that was created as an International Auxillary Language. In other words, it was created so that it would be easy for people to talk to each other.

On the other hand, it could just show that we have a very knowledgeable Localisation manager. After all, she knows latin and Klingon too.

It was a passing comment; you're reading too much into it.

So far, two whole words in MechScape are in Esperanto.

My first find

I wouldn't even call this a find. You're just pointing out something that's most likely completely irrelevant.

Chill I.

It is cool that a RS translator knows about it, meaning that more than just some species names could be in Esperanto and it could have a dominant role in Mechscape's texts, but I highly doubt that the game will ever be fully offered in Esperanto, for obvious reasons.

It may mean that ms and rs share translators
Pliigi
I really don't think this is as significant as you think it is.

Yes, it's interesting that she mentioned esperanto, but I think it was just a joke. happy.gif

Esperanto would be interesting, but I doubt it'll play any important role in the game (aside from some names) considering it's not a widely learned language like english is around the world.

Who knows, it could be that esperanto is what everyone speaks in mechscape. On the other hand, it could be a minor bit of context.
EchoNova
Using Esperanto in Mechscape is just a clever way of coming up with names that already mean something without using a recognizable language. I doubt it will actually have much importance to the game.

Where does esperanto come from anyway? Country, city etc.

Passing over that...

Really, this is pretty interesting compared to what we have.
What would you rather have? "Mod MMG announces MechScape to be released SOON!"

I'm not surprised that a professional translator knows about Esperanto. It is kinda related to what they do for a living.

Really, how many times would a professional translator need to use esperanto? According to wikipedia, only 10,000,000 people have ever studied it to any extent.

Esperanto could be used to coin words that otherwise would be very hard to convert from one language to another. My thinking for the reason why they are doing Esperanto for the race names is so that they can just keep the same name since it has an origin from another language (often considered a universal language candidate).

Thus this makes it so that they can port it to other languages without having to spend as much time on names.

As you stated the only really probable reason a translator would know such an obscure and little used language like Esperanto is if he or she needed to know it for his or her clients or employer, in this case Jagex. Why would Jagex want a translator that knows Esperanto? Because they need it for names. This implies strongly that language teams will be shared.

Yay... shared language teams... tell us something we don't suspect Jagex. confused.gif

Esperanto isn't an obscure language; there are 54,200,000 Google results for it. Yes, not very many people speak it fluently, but a lot of people have heard of it. It's her job to know about languages. It was just a joke!

I agree that Esperanto will probably used in MechScape, but I really don't think is proof of anything.

They mentioned esperanto because thats what the idea behind it was, for everybody to learn it. Of course that hasn't worked out so well so its a joke.

As for its use in MechScape, its well documented language that doesnt have a ton of primary speakers which makes it great for in game use. Just like how many RuneScape areas base various names off of a single culture (such as canifis npc names).

I doubt anyone at Jagex actually knows esperanto, i'm not even a translator and I knew what esperanto was, but I don't know a single word in it.
