Reliance ADAG owned Zapak has tied up with virtual world maker Jagex Games Studio to host its flagship game Runescape in India. The UK-based Jagex has also created FunOrb, a website for Java based games and a minigame for children called Vertigo.

Zapak seems to be on a spree of building up its games database by partnering with international publishers, which is good for gamers in the country. It recently partnered with Chobots to bring in the MMORPG for kids, and before that brought Wanted, another multiplayer based on the movie, Sherwood Dungeon, Tank Ball, the social hangout game Club Marian and TBA Virtual World. The multiplayer games section on Zapak includes snooker, chess, a dart game and Teen Patti.

If you’ve played Second Life, Runescape is similar but has younger members and has more adventure. In the game, you travel around, learn how to combat enemies, wield spells, witness events, mingle with other players, and even play mini-games that are set in Runescape. There are some 38,038 players on the platform, which seems primarily UK-focussed. Zapak seems to have neglected the online store - merchandising could have been a revenue stream for the company which told us that they were looking at virtual currency and other e-commerce options within games. The store offers books, backpacks and accessories branded with Runescape in pounds.

The quality of journalism on this article seems poor but it is interesting that they are trying to expand the RuneScape player base.
DjIceman
Interesting.

There are already a few India worlds. They're expanding?

Recently, there had been some problems with the existing worlds.

India worlds currently, are well known for their horrible lag.

Thank you

If 'the' MMORPG is RuneScape, I'm gonna cry.

That makes it sound like all the world servers are going to be hosted in India, which I don't think is what this means, is it?

Umm what? Did they spend ten minutes Googling Jagex before writing this article? Vertigo? dry.gif

38,038...? What...?

No.

Huh?

------

The only change I can see is this. It's like miniclip. Is that what this article is supposed to be about?
DjIceman
And yes, I wonder what's all this other non-sense about?
Shadowgoomba
Hm.. well if they moved the servers to India, they could save a bit of money I imagine. Meaning they could hire more programmers to finish mechscape. hm..
DjIceman
I think the loss of players due to a horrible lag would make it more of a loss, to be honest. In which case, they would actually need to fire some of the developers.

Thank you
Iceman
Someone
Lol the writer of that article knows nothing about Jagex or Runescape
Crash Jordan
Worst written article ever.
Aslancsc
lolwut?
Ritter
my shit can write better than this, 38k players? try over 100k all day every day
Dracul
Eh......must be written by an asian or indian with broken english
Robinhoodrs

So there looking to sell GP on there Online Store? Or am I reading this wrong?

@IceMan
The lag is only because you are most likely further away from the Indian servers, so if you were in India, you wouldn't lag at all.
Lord John
What does this really mean? They'll set up servers in India (which they already have) or that Customer support will now be outsourced to India. (Which would probably better than their current outsourcing to the London Zoo Monkey exhibit.)

I lol'd at the description of Runescape. "You witness events." What events? Solar eclipses? All I witness is being asked for a GF every 10 seconds.
Cutter631
The hover cursor icons are pretty useless. I know that an axe cuts down a try and you drink a potion. What were they trying to accomplish with that one?

Yes, I know that. What's your point?

"If you’ve played Second Life, Runescape is similar but has younger members and has more adventure."

Complete bullshit.
Compaq
They haven't moved all the servers to India, they haven't moved all of the Customer Support to India. They have found a publisher in India who will now deal with the game in that region; much like that they achieved with the Brazilian:Portuguese version of RuneScape. It does not, however, appear to coincide with an Indian (Hindi?) language version of the game. ermm.gif

It's quite well known for publishers to take control of a region.
Blizzard used companies in China. There was even a recent situation where they broke dealership with one company with the intention to changing to another - the deal was never completed and put on indefinite hold iirc.
DDO had Turbine themselves in the USA and Codemasters handled the European release.
etc
etc

Those people sometimes write in better english than someone who has english as their primary language. And btw, people don't write the way they talk...
DjIceman
True. Take me for example. :P

My primary language is Estonian and yet, I speak or well, at least my grammar is way better than some people who's primary language is English.

The writer probably didn't really care what he/she wrote. Probably never heard of Jagex or RuneScape. Fact is, they didn't even put the slightest effort into writing a proper article.

So, whether they're from Asia or India or where ever else, plays absolutely no role here.

Thank you

Ok Zapak is a games portal similar to what miniclip was when Jagex partnered with them. Now to go back and disect the points you all seem to have trouble understanding. *Particularly picking on Pligii's post although editing his comments out lawl*

No it doesn't mean their hosting everything in India. It makes it sound like they are expanding their game and getting a couple better servers instead of the crap India ones we have currently. It also suggests that they will be trying to expand their Indian player base by by expansion.

QUOTE

They looked at the Jagex website, if you never looked at the minigames tab they currently have an option for FunOrb and they still have Vertigo (Original) on their corporate website.

QUOTE

38,038...? What...?

38,038 on the ZAPAK platform, not RuneScape! ZAPAK the website they are putting RuneScape on in a frame (Once again similar to miniclip).

QUOTE
which seems primarily UK-focussed.

No. Again, ZAPAK seems UK-focused on games not RuneScape.

Huh?

This is only one I have difficulty understanding. One thing is that it DOES NOT suggest Jagex will be doing virtual currency/e commerce. Zapak possibly for some of their other games though.
Ren
Yes, it means Jagex have a partner company in India similar to how they partnered with UnitedGames for runescape.nl. No, it doesn't mean they are moving their offices to India or anything particularly dramatic.

QUOTE

What they are saying is that Zapak is generally interested in making use of additional revenue streams for all their ventures so they might want to provide an Indian version of the Jagex Store to make more money.

So, this is a lot like when the French RS came out, there was a little advert on the French RS site for Game One, some sort of gaming magazine.

Interesting line which might not be quite accurate:
QUOTE
Do you have plans to port RuneScape to game consoles as well?

Smith:RuneScape is too complex a game to be able to make it available on a console. Right now it works best on PCs, laptops and netbooks. We'll need to work a lot on it and simplify it to make it available on a console. We're not thinking about it now but it's a future possibility.

When asked "What about parents blaming online games for children reading less?" they missed a trick in not plugging RuneScape's book, tho not sure if that's easily available in India.

officialjagex tweet: "Some TV footage of the #RuneScape launch in India is available at http://bit.ly/EoKsG. Thanks to @Ayush_S92 for the find :-) Ajd"
Orbie
My question: Why is there a box? RuneScape does not come in a box. Especially not a humongous box. Only a guitar hero would come in a box that large, and no one would buy Guitar Hero: RuneScape...well, I would...no one normal
Ren
I'm guessing there was a box since it was easier than holding the Internet.
