Yes, every forum needs one. For any and all metalheads here (myself included), this will be where we can discuss our metal tastes and likings. I'm into black metal mostly, and melodic death metal. My top bands;
Amon Amarth Arch Enemy Behemoth Children of Bodom Cradle of Filth Devildriver Dimmu Borgir In Flames Metallica Nightwish Pantera Slayer

Kamelot are pretty good. I also forgot to add Sonata Arctica, man they pwn. Sonata > Kamelot
Slipknot is ughhhh. It's like newbie metal. I liked them when I first got into metal, but now I can't stand them. Same with bands like Bullet For My Valentine and Disturbed. It's music you listen to when you first get into metal.

Majority of metal concerts in Australia require you to be 18+, so I can't go.
Arch Enemy AND Amon Amarth are coming next month and I can't go. Fml.

No guessing which band is one of my favourites ;)
I also love Sonata Arctica, Finnish power metal. They really have a lot of talent and I'm a big fan of Tony and Henkka (for his awesome keytar solos).
I also like In Flames and that genre of metal. Some metal however, sounds like wannabe metal. Wannabe metal is the term I place on bands who either have imitation sounds of another great band, generic lyrics (using the most cliche metal phrases), or singers who sound like they are 18. I prefer my metal singers to have some balls except if they are female, in which case I prefer them not to scream and sing angelically ;)
I guess I've gone a bit soft lately listening to power/symphonic metal, but I do appreciate a good ol' war cry once in a while. Unfortunately, I've begun to notice that there are a lot of crap metal bands out there.
I'm pretty passionate about the music I like and I'm glad to see a few Aussie metal heads ;)
EDIT: As for Dream Theater, I've listened to them a bit and watched some live YouTube videos and they are great musicians (really great keyboarder) but I personally think their vocalist sucks after watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O4HOMPD-1E...=PL&index=7

Sonata are awesome! I can't wait for the new album, I heard a track and it was awesome. Unia is so fucking awesome too. I'm also a big fan of In Flames, mostly their older stuff. Clayman is the best album for sure. Dream Theater is okaaaayyyy, nothing amazing.
Nightwish is definitely one of my favorite bands, do you like Anette or Tarja more? I prefer Anettes vocals more, but something about Tarja seems to suit the band more.
Lord John
Sep 6 2009, 02:04 PM
I'm a Tarja fan, more because of her operatic vocals although I do love Anette unlike those noobies on Youtube who just whinge about her all the time. I saw them live last year at the Enmore which was awesome.
I love Unia (got it for $5 in JB Hifi, epic win) just because it's so unique and different to their other songs. I still love Full Moon, Don't Say A Word and all those classics though. People complained about certain tracks on Unia that they didn't fit together, but I don't agree. It's actually quite interesting because usually on an album around half the songs usually aren't as good as the others. For Unia it's not like that and there are only a few I don't like. (I personally think "The Worlds Forgotten... " is a pretty bad song, but that's just me.) I love Paid in Full, My Dreams but a Drop..., The Vice, In Black and White and It Won't Fade.
They are epic live, and they are playing at the Enmore in the "Scream Fest" but it's far to expensive to just see them for a short time. $136 for a pass and you also watch all these others bands, most of which I really dislike. (Virgin Black in particular. They are the only Australian Symphonic Metal band accroding to Wikipedia and I don't really think they live up to the title.)
I also love playing keyboard to metal songs and just soloing over the top or playing along (even if the song itself doesn't have keys. Enter Sandman sounds awesome on keys ;)
You can tell I'm a NW fan because I've compiled a massive backing tracks of a Nightwish Medly into my keyboard ;) I'm currently continueing to work on "The Cage" by Sonata. I just challenge myself by finding songs I like and working them out myself. I can play almost all Nightwish songs (even the ones I don't listen to much) and a lot of Sonata and other metal bands. I guess it's a good thing I'm doing Music at Uni :)

How could I have forgot that one?
Anyone here a fan of Kamelot, Rhapsody or any of those power metal bands?
I also quite like Rob Zombie although only a few of his songs. Some of his lyrics put me off.
Crash Jordan
Sep 7 2009, 02:22 AM
Kamelot is pretty good, they remind me a lot of sonata but obviously not as good. Nothing Ever Dies is one of my favorite songs. Can't say I'm a fan of Rob Zombie though.
Disturbed is about as much metal as I can handle for I stop liking it. I'm more into mainstream rock. Pantera and Korn are both pretty good too, but they aren't exactly on my top 10 list.
Crash Jordan
Sep 7 2009, 04:20 AM
Disturbed is the worst form of metal on this earth. They are probably more rock. Same with Korn.
Pantera are pretty good. Pantera and Metallica are good bands to listen to when you first get into metal.

I like old Disturbed, not their new stuff. I don't see how Disturbed isn't metal, it isn't exactly as hardcore as some of your stuff, but I think most people can agree Disturbed is metal. I don't like Metallica because you can't understand them in alot of their songs. Rap tends to do that as well.

Korn Godsmack Testament Rammstein DevilDriver Coal Chamber

I don't listen to Disturbed but quite a few friends do. I'm not paying them out, but a lot of their songs sound similar. You could fit the chorus of "Ten Thousand Fists" to most of their songs as they all use the same chord progressions.
One band I can't stand that you like it Cradle of Filth. I just find the vocalist vile and absolutely disgusting in terms of vocal qualities. Same with Children of Bodom. Instrumentally it sounds great but that kind of scream singing just isn't for me.

What do you think the Greatest metal song of all time is? What do you think the Greatest Live metal song of all time is?
And live song, Well ive seen Iron maiden live and they sure do put on an extremely awesome show, So id either say Run to the hills/Aces high/Fear of the dark. Or The Spirit Carries On by Dream Theater, All are good choices and i cant pick a favourite :p

Run To The Hills is awesome. One of the greatest metal songs, definitely.
Whenever Iron Maiden come to Australia, they sell out within a few minutes, it's crazy.

What do you think the Greatest metal song of all time is? Master of Puppets, but it isn't my favourite song. Just one that everyone knows, so comercially it is "No. 1" What do you think the Greatest Live metal song of all time is? I guess it's all opinion. I was yelling along to Wish I had an Angel at the NW concert. Loved that live ;)

Yeah, after reading that, I had a think, and it was a cross between One and Master of Puppets, both by Metallica.
My personal #1 metal song of all time is like, All Nightmare Long by Metallica. Or maybe Nemo by Nightwish.

i usually listen to old school metal and sometimes glam metal my metal bands:
Iron Maiden Pantera Judas priest Black sabbath Ozzy Osbourene (old stuff, not new) disturbed led zeppelin (i consider them metal) metallica Guns n' Roses Slayer Skid row Posion Kizz-Kiss however u spell it In flames Rise against (some think its punk, i think its metal)
I think the best metal song ever is number of the beast by iron maiden- i would love to see them at a concert

Well, some of my favorite bands are Parkway Drive, Otep, System of a Down, Tool, Underoath, and A Perfect Circle. Most of those are debatable as to if you could even say they are metal or not, but I'll leave that up to opinion :p

Haha, I can agree that a bunch of Disturbed's new stuff sounds alike... especially as far as chords go. And I never said I was a fan of Cradle of Filth... I like to actually understand the lyrics, not cover my ears from the shrill screaming like you're being castrated by a pair of dull, rusty hedge clippers.

Good idea letting us hardcore headbangers sharing our tastes. (Okay that sounded weird. :/) Erm, onto the good part, I like sort of Christian Metalcore and Soft Metal (no I'm not a pussy. -.-) My favourite bands are: Norma Jean Chevelle System of a Down (S.O.A.D) Breaking Benjamin Favourite songs are: Robots 3 Humans 0 by Norma Jean Blow Me Away by Breaking Benjamin Chop Suey! by S.O.A.D The Red by Chevelle.
What songs do you guys suggest I should listen to if you have the same taste as me?

I would assume that's because you have heard the songs a lot and looked up the lyrics. Once you've read the lyrics it's easy to hear them as they are sung, but without reading them you most likely could not understand them. That's the same with most metal bands actually. You have to listen to it a lot before you understand what they are actually saying ;P

Personally the vocals and lyrics dont bother me if i cant understand them with Metal, usually looking for kick ass guitaring/drums when i listen to metal. Usually if i want to listen to lyrics i would just listen to some of my rock collection such as Creed or Nickleback.
All depends what type of Metal you mainly listen to though, I can understand like 90% of my metal songs because i mainly listen to stuff like Iron maiden/Dream theater/Metallica/Megadeth...... All of which have Singers you can easily understand.
But when it comes to Screaming bands, that i actually dont listen to alot lately, I usually never understand 1 word lol.

Kinda. You gotta get used to the vocalist in questions voice. But really, the best part about metal is the guitar, hands down.

I have a to say a good keyboardist rocks more than a guitar ;) I mean guitar solos are one thing, but how many people pull off epic keyboard solos?
In my humble opinion any good band has a keyboardist, but that's just my bias.

Hi there,
Nice wide selection of bands being discussed, good to see no flaming and saying someone's favourite metal bands are not metal bands... I hate those comments on Youtube discussions.
I'm going to say that Down are my favourite metal band (no-one ever suggests Down on these types of forums, either)... sort of a NOLA scene supergroup, I like the classic-sounding Sabbathyness of the whole NOLA scene, really. Also wery, wery good live...Phil seemed to interact with every member of the audience throughout the gig, awesome !!!
Oh, and for Christian Metal, I would suggest Trouble... but good luck finding any of their stuff.
And for general coolness... QOTSA, Kyuss, Acrimony, Monster Magnet.
Enjoy,
Vonie

The only Christian Metal I know of is Stryper and Demon Hunter.
Yeah, I'm glad there's no flaming here. The people on Youtube have the sadest arguements...
Can't wait for their album to come out in 4 days. I hope it's released on time in Australia as I remember Nightwish came out a bit after it's official "release" date.

The Days Of Grays will be awesome! I heard a track and it was great. :D
Can't wait.
Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy both have albums coming out this year, but CoB's is a cover album(shit) and AE's is just all their older songs redone. Not looking forward to either.
Lacuna Coil is very like Within Temptation and Evanescence.
I prefer the operatic style of Tarja Turunen although I personally think her music is far worse now she isn't with Nightwish.

Have you listened to Stryper? They are more Glam Rock/Metal but still awesome.
You know your a hard core drummer when your cymbals are suspended from the ceiling by chains.
Also, another place to find metal bands is to search Wikipedia. They have a list of all the different genres and all the bands classed under that genre. Then you just have to find interesting named bands under that genre and YouTube them to see if they are any good ;)

So, the new Sonata Arctica album was terrible. What a let down. Unia still remains my favorite.
I've only just got the chance to listen to Evangelion by Behemoth, pretty good album, worth a listen if you like Black Metal.
And Children of Bodom chucked out a cover album too. Big let down, mostly old covers. Damn it Alexi ;<
Arch Enemy has a new album or something too, haven't heard. I should go download it now tbh..
Lord John
Oct 13 2009, 07:23 AM
Yeah, I've heard Sonata's new album on Youtube and really don't have any songs on there that I like. Flag in the Ground is the only real good one as it resembles their old music.
The funniest thing is that people love this album and previously wrote reviews on how bad Unia was. I, on the other hand, love almost all the songs on Unia which is amazing as half the songs on an album are usually ones you don't like as much.
Moral of the story, don't trust reviews.
