Yes, this is a fanfiction. A really short one, tbh.
It hit the newspapers and TV stations like a bomb. With the announcement of MechScape, to be released on June 18th, 2010, that the servers for search engines, Jagex sites and their respective fansites, and many popular ISPs, melted under the extreme workload of searches for "MechScape", "RuneScape", "Jagex", and "Why did Yahoo shut down". In the three weeks and thirteen hours that the flaming servers remained burning, the effects of the smoke had multiplied the effects of greenhouse gases times three. Air conditioners and fans stayed on all day to combat the heat, which contributed more to the effects. It depleted all the energy of the major energy companies. With over 80 trillion dollars in damages to most of the largest companies in the world, money was worthless. People died off by the dozens in fires and heat strokes. In a desperate attempt to save humanity, NASA launched a ship to the closest planet that could possibly be inhabited by humans. The passengers of this ship included the strongest and smartest people of the people who were still alive and fertile, to create a super smart race so that a problem like this would never happen again. They landed on the planet, and in sort of an ironic twist, they named the planet off of a product by the people credited for killing the Earth. The planet was named Gielenor, and everybody lived in peace until they realized that the planet contained an airborne version of HIV.
And that is why Jagex has not given us a release date. Because if it did, it would cause the apocalypse and give the smartest people AIDS after flying to Gielenor.

I lol'd, good 'work'.
Nice job.
Imagine if that happened :P, Where there was just an overload of people googling.
It would be pretty hard to do that :P
I don't care if this happens, release it anyway.

Good and bad. Good description, bad ending, literally. Not sure how I feel about it. From a critic's standpoint, I want to praise it, but from a reader's standpoint, I want to get run as fast as I can into the nearest brick wall. An odd mixture of feelings.
EDIT: Note to self: do not run into another brick wall.

Holy crap. The servers went down due to the loads of Name Changes... This story seems so much more realistic now... They better have working servers when it releases.

It's not that they don't work - there's very few servers that can handle processing those hundreds of thousands of requests at a time.
That said, Jagex knows very well how popular their game is. It's really inexcusable for a company of their means to just 'meh' at that kind of shortfall in capacity. =/

Very few servers can handle those? Surely they can just buy more? They aren't limited to one or two servers for name changes right?
