Full Version: EVE freezes accounts, in credit crisis

No, it's not something happening in the real world, it's happening in a virtual world in the game of EVE.

EVE Online's largest player-controlled virtual bank, Ebank, just can't seem to catch a break these days. A few months after it was revealed that the company had been defrauded of a staggering amount of cash, it turns out that the institution's digital vaults are far more barren than many realized, leading to an in-game freezing of accounts for any individual or organization that happened to have invested any InterStellar Kredits (ISK) with the bank.

Early this summer, it came to light that a veteran EVE player (known only as "Ricdic") had embezzled —and then sold in the real world— over 200 billion ISK from Ebank, causing a run on the virtual financial institution. However, this was just the beginning of the problems for the player-owned bank. Recently installed Ebank Chairman Ray McCormack admitted that the bank had been mismanaged, and rules, safeguards, and controls were not enforced. As a result, it's been revealed that Ebank is 380 billion ISK poorer thanks to a number of defaulted loans. Because of the aforementioned mismanagement, it apparently took the bank's new officers a while to figure out just how far in the red their institution is.

At the moment, customer accounts will remain frozen until the bank manages to stabilize. According to McCormack, "withdrawals will be allowed once the bank achieves a maintainable equity status of 90% (1.8t currently); they will be stopped again should that fall below 80%."

The main problem with Ebank's account freezing is that it could do some serious harm to the game's economy, mainly because players won't be able to withdraw their funds in order to pay for in-game goods and services. Exactly how long a recovery will take is currently anyone's guess, though, as it turns out that the board of directors revealed that the bank is currently facing a deficit of roughly 1.2 trillion ISK, with the amount increasing by approximately 12 billion ISK a month.

Sounds actually fun. I'd love to play a game where such things can happen as it would actually teach you economy skills and force you to be always on guard.

Gaia Online is pretty good for that. Very much a free market system, but with a central bank. I made several thousand before I quit, but I also made some crappy investments. One, the nitemare headband, I bought for 800K and is now somewhere around 200K. That's like losing $100.

So like does Ricdic go to jail or something? :P

Dang, that sounds soooo real!! A board of directors that can comment to newspapers and stuff! I totally want to be in on that. It sounds so uber. I think its cool that there can even be a player run bank.... I am not sure if there is code to do that kinda stuff.
SkyArmada
Regardless of how bad that situation is, that's pretty awesome for a game to do this.
Dracul
Yeah its really fuckin awsome
Crash Jordan
Sounds awesome.
Ritter
merch clans are ruining all games

I remember reading about the director that stole the money a while back - he used it to pay off some loans. Seems like he's screwed over the entire economy in the process.

For something even cooler that happened in EVE, look up the Guiding Hand Social Club.

It made me want to play it so much.

I've always been interested in Eve because of stuff like this. Even though the economy is now in crisis because a bank run entirely by players is failing, Eve's admins choose not to go and just pump billions by pressing "Add Money." Instead, they let the simulation play out. Sounds awesome. The only reason I don't play Eve is the fact that it allegedly can seem a lot like real life work, except you don't get dollars out of it, only "kredits".

I hope they don't pull a Jagex.

I don't play, but that's disheartening for anyone.

Sounds interesting. I don't find it surprising though. Anyone could easily make a killing selling in-game goods like that. Player-run banks in a video game like EVE seem interesting in concept, but what keeps them working? In real life, if something like this happened, the person would go to jail. In the game, the player could easily take everyones money, sell it for real world money, and have no consequences on them.

I don't recall this being the first time either. EVE isn't put your money here and it's safe, game.

All I can say is...

I have to say, This would provide and excellent source for scientific and academic research and study into this kind of a scenario compared to real life counterpart scenario's to perhaps find a solution.

Matter of fact there was a bug error pandemic i believe in WoW not to long ago, might be another game, where somehow a virus or something would literally spread from one player to another killing alot of characters in the process. It naturally recieved attention from real medical groups and related scientific think tanks on comparison studies and such.

They already use MMOs for economics research as well as for many other studies. I personally have learned quite a lot form MMOs reflecting upon what could be parallel to the actual world. The hardest part is people quitting because it's like someone dies but then their belongings don't get passed on.

Nice

I want a better post next time. "Nice" is very general and doesn't explain what you are thinking.
