Following months of rumors and weeks of retail leaks, Microsoft has made it official. Starting Friday, August 28, the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite will only cost $299.99, down from its current $399.99 price point.

[UPDATE] The new model will remain largely the same as the previous configuration, other than the fact that, like the PlayStation 3, it will no longer be bundled with either an HDMI or an component HD AV cable. "We have found that many Xbox 360 customers were not using the HD cables included in the Xbox 360 Elite box, so we removed them," said a Microsoft rep of the change. While HDMI cables can be purchased for under $10 online, the 360 component HD AV cable is $39.99 new.

Also, as rumored, the 60GB Xbox 360 Pro is being "phased out" at a $249.99 price point, down from $299.99. "It's being put to bed," Xbox 360 and Xbox Live director of product management Aaron Greenberg told GameSpot. The executive believes stocks of the Pro, which will be the last white 360 with a hard drive packed in, should last until just after the holidays.

Endangered species: The now-$249.99 Pro will be gone by year's end.
With the Pro's demise, the Xbox 360 will have two SKUs: the $299.99 Elite and the $199.99 Arcade, which has 512MB of built-in memory for game saves and Xbox dashboard software installs. The price of the latter console will remain the same, and Greenberg said there were no announcements regarding the prices of the individually sold 360 hard drives, which currently cost $99.99 for the 60GB and $149.99 for the 120GB. Greenberg also had no updates on the cost of the 360's wireless adapter, which sells for $99.99.

The Elite's reduction comes exactly one week after Sony announced the $299.99 PlayStation 3 Slim at GamesCom in Germany. However, despite the fact the Blu-ray and Wi-Fi-equipped PS3 now matches the Elite in terms of memory and price, Greenberg still feels the latter is a better value. He pointed to 360 software exclusives, like Halo 3: ODST and Forza MotorSport 3. and Xbox Live's online features, like Netflix and the forthcoming Last.fm, Facebook, and Twitter integration, still set for "this holiday season." He also said price was a major factor for the 360 selling well.

"You cannot underestimate the fact that we have two consoles. If you have $200 in your pocket today, you can go buy an Xbox 360," he explained. "I think a big part of the reason why--at a time where Nintendo and Sony are seeing double-digit year-over-year declines, and we're actually up 17 percent--is due to that mass-market price point."

At $199.99, the Xbox 360 Arcade is still the cheapest console on the market.
While Greenberg did believe the price drop will increase Xbox 360 sales, he declined to offer a full fiscal-year forecast for the console, which has now sold over 31 million units worldwide to date. (Sony has said it expects to sell 13 million PS3s by the end of its fiscal year.) He also declined to comment on whether or not Microsoft was planning a hardware revision of the 360 similar to the PS3 Slim, which now boasts an improved cooling system and a smaller and more energy efficient 45nm Cell processor. Without getting into specifics, Greenberg did say that Microsoft made internal improvements to the Xbox 360 hardware long before Sony did, declaring, "We're ahead on that."

In terms of recent Xbox Live initiatives, Greenberg said the recent launch of the premium avatar item store "has exceeded even our wildest projections," although he, again, declined to give hard numbers. Although Splosion Man is currently the only title to reward players with avatar items, he said many upcoming 360 games will have such unlockables. "I think it will become fairly common in games going forward," explained Greenberg.

Last but not least, Greenberg said the freshly minted Games on Demand store has been "more in line with expectations. Like digital distribution in other industries, there's a lot of trial and error. But for the most part, it's performing well."

And guess which console still costs more in the end.

In my opinion, the PS3 exclusives beat the 360' ones out of the water.

They only did it to compete with Sony, but it's good news nonetheless. happy.gif

It annoys me because I bought the 360 arcade for $350AU back in november 2007. It got the red ring of death by febuary 2008 which ment I wasted money on games like halo 3, cod4, gow, etc and a 20gb and 120gb hard drive.
I ordered a repair in march as Playing runescape for a month was good but I had been hacked and perm banned. they then sent me an email in june after me sending multiple emails to them asking about my repair order, when would I receive the box. they're email in june stated that my warranty had just ran out (june 12th) and that my xbox 360 had its free repair cancelled, which had proved to me that microsoft scammed me out of buying a console which had something wrong with it and they obviously didn't give a shit about the consumer.

Now that the xbox arcade is cheap, may aswell save up for one because I have many games and two hard drives I can use :D.

I'll only buy the 360 if the red ring of death has been fixed.
Drachen
me9374, I would just sell the games and get another console... I've had my PS2 for a long time, and it has been reliable for that time. I don't like my Wii so I would recommend a PS3.

If the Xbox fails often, you should not spend money on it. That's just encouraging microsoft to keep the failure rate up. What really amazed me was when I was reading a site on the RROD and Xbox players were bragging about how they were on their 3rd or 4th console...
Dirk
The price cut means nothing to me. After two(2!) red rings of death, I'm done with the 360. Just going to sit back and wait for Gran Turismo 5 to come out and buy a PS3.
Darth Irule
To bad I already have a 360. Maybe this means the prices on the hard drives went down because myn is almost full.
Aslancsc
ALWAYS get the extended warranty. Xboxes are gauranteed to fail before the extended warranty is up (2 years). And that bragging is saying how much they no life halo, which is a status symbol on xbox websites...

My brother loves that game! He has 50s in everything.

I <3 the 360

If I remember correctly the failure rates for each console are...

360': 54% (RROD)
PS3: 12% (YROD)
Wii: 2% (Not sure, but I'll go with BROD)
Drachen
Makes you wonder if those failure rates are intentional... because when you have Xbox's over 50% failure rate, and players bragging they're on X RROD's there is SOMETHING wrong. Especially since the Xbox has been out for a while now...

Brilliant strategy by Microsoft to do that actually... :p since apparently it's a "badge of honor" needing to get a new Xbox after your others died.

Even though if someone bragging about their dead 360' (which is pretty high on the stupidity scale), I don't think anyone would want to intenetionally break it and risk the chance of losing it.

Edit: Kewl, 300 posts.

Guess school isn't as big of a deal as I thought it was going to be. I regret making that Priorities thread confused.gif

Hmm, I'd still rather go with a PS3, especially because of Xbox 360's immense failure rate. Also the amount of good games coming out for the PS3 makes me want one more and more.

Agreed.

The PS2 was amazing, and the PS3 certainly holds up to its legacy. From what I've seen and played, the PS3 beats the 360'. The only thing I'm really jealous of is Left 4 Dead, but I can get that on my computer so it's not really that big of a deal.

Can't wait to get a PS3.

I'll only buy the 360 if the red ring of death has been fixed.

Reports say that the 360 has gone up to a 50% chance of failure from 30% while the PS3 is sitting at 10%. Even if it was bogus (which I doubt) - 30% is still a good chance. My 360 hasn't failed yet - but I also never play it.

Also, even though the 360 is down to $300 now, you still need to buy a wireless adapter (afaik - unless they ship it with the new 360 models, which I doubt).
Bladepaul
I am not affected by your silly red rings of chaos, for I have an X-Box 360 ELITE!

Because I am l337. And it looks great sitting next to my 60 gig, original launch PS3 with the white original-launch wii on the far end with that orange terminator-like glow from the led.

Meh, I knew I got the Wii one way off.
Man
I still wouldn't buy an XBox, tell me when Wii has a price cut.
Lord John
Wii is the most fun if you have friends who come around :)
A great party/social console.
PureScottM
I've gotten the red ring of death twice, only one of those times did it actually break the system, the other time I smacked it a few times and messed with the cords and it worked, the system seems good enough to me, and the price cut seems normal
me9374
OMFG, Just read all these replys and its pretty sad because red rings of death don't appear anymore.

The red ring of death was caused by the heat pipes being in front of the ONLY venilation + fans *slaps forehead*
But its completely fixed on all newer products now, the 360 is also less noisy and it has a new HD dashboard (menu, interface thing).

I got a text today from GameCrazy saying the Xbox 360: Elite price has been dropped by $100. Are you refereeing to that or something different, lol?

Do you have any sources showing that the 360 doesn't get RROD anymore?
Alex
I can confirm his statement - while it's still possible to get RROD on the newer low power chipsets, anything from the Falcon onwards is very unlikely to get it, and the recent Jasper is almost impervious to it.

It's basically only the original chipset which uses a lot of power hence more heat and a poor cooling system that gets RROD.
Gandaf007
Despite the RROD, the cost of the 360' is WAY larger in the end.

Aslancsc
because you have to buy two or more xboxes...
that or you have to get multiple 50-70 dollar warranties that give you a new free xbox after rrod
Arain321
The pricecut should boost sales but I think the PS3 Slim will outsell it by a small margin.
Flatypus
I was going to but a 360 Pro. But Elite are better, right? I've never actually seen anybody with one though. And if they cut the price, I'll still have to pay £50 extra to get the best Xbox instead of the middle-one like I wanted. So that sucks. I'm confused now :s
Should I get a Pro or wait until the Elites drop in price? Why are they better than Pros?
intellix
another price cut? :D Can't wait to buy another for when I move out :P

Have to buy a wireless adapter, if I remember correctly there's a specific typpe you have to buy which is around 100 dollars. You also have to pay for online. Like I said, a lot more expensive in the end.

Too bad that I've already got one!

My oppinion about the 360: Xbox 360 might not be a very good console compared to ps3, but atleast it has some awesome games. Little big planet is probably the only game I'd like of all the ps3 games ... and maybe metal gear solid. But they're not as awesome as Halo 3.

I was thinking that too, the price cut seems so much more appealing on the PS3 because it comes with most of the peripherals already (actually not sure about the slim).
I'm not too big of a 360 fan, and don't want to bother spending my money on a new console anyways, so to be honest I don't even know why I bothered posting, lol.
jmb
This just indicates that the next gen of consoles are on the way, will it be christmas next year? Probably, so if you are buying a console now be prepared for it not to be top of the range for long ;)

Halo 3 is the worst in series, so far. I have high hopes for ODST, though.
