Sony saved its big new hardware announcement for last week's GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, saying that the ergonomic PlayStation 3 Slim would be available for $299 beginning the first week of September. However, Sony also had a substantive PS3-related hardware announcement during this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, where it demoed its new camera-based motion-sensing controller.

Sony's new motion controller in action.
As part of an interview with The Times of London today, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai said that gamers can expect to see the PS3's latest motion-sensing controller in stores sometime during spring 2010.

"We are slating it for spring of next year," he told The Times. "One of the things is that we just don't want to put out the controller. We need great software that supports the controller at launch. It's something that we've been working on for the longest time."

Hirai did not elaborate on which games would support the controller at launch. Sony demoed the device using a number of prototype games in July, showing on one end of the spectrum a tennis game and on the other a first-person fantasy action adventure. SCEA senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille later noted that various third-party developers have already gotten their hands on the new technology.

With a spring 2010 launch, it appears as if Sony's motion-sensing controller will beat Microsoft's similar technology to market. The Xbox 360 maker also unveiled its own camera-based motion-sensing device, code-named Project Natal, during E3 2009. However, the publisher has yet to establish a firm date on when that device will be available.

I personally think I'll like this better than Natal, seeing as I like having something physical in my hand when I play video games.

Your thoughts?

I saw videos of it at E3. I have mixed feelings however.

On one side you have this fantastic new controller which could potentially work very well with Playstations game style.

Then you have the fact it is similar to the Wii. I really don't want PS3 to go ALL casual. It would be great to see this implemented in something like Final Fantasy or Dynasty Warriors. Then you could go into other shooting games etc.

Just for Gods Sake don't make an Animal Crossing...

intresting, but i've watched some youtube vids and i think its a bit hard to do it the right way with all the games. but would be nice i got a PS3 so i gonna check it out in Spring of 2010 i hope.

Dude, this controller will do what Wii was supposed to do but never did. Not only is this thing MUCH more accurate than the crap-tastic wii mote, but it's also being used for all of the right things. Wii was supposed to be a revolution in video game controls. Instead, all we got was a fucking waste of it's potential as I sat there and made masturbation motions with the damned thing to make Mario shake a can of soda to see how high it spurts out.

I dont't care who Sony is ripping with their controller, I support them 110% because if this is done right, imagine the awesome level of gameplay to be had using this thing to aim weapons, use fantasy swords, etc.

IMAGINE IT BEING USED FOR AN MMO CONTROL SCHEME ALA OBLIVION!

I'd rather have a controller that vibrated :/

Project Natal is so much fucking better.
Bladepaul
Except for the name.

PRE-Natal, anyone? WTH were the dudes at Microsoft thinking when they named it Natal?

That, and Peter Molyneux obsession over AI, wetting himself over "Milo" the little boy that's so realistic, the sim will be an instant hit with child pedo's all across the world.

Personally, I look forward to both as I have all three systems. That's a premature strike at any nintendo fan-bots that decide to challenge my assertion that the wii is a kiddy novelty failure and Mario is just being produced at a machine gun rate for the money, by stating that I should go play it first.

I got the wii and PS3 within 2 weeks of their release. 690 bucks on Ebay for my 60 gig. And my 360 elite was about a year ago.

Wii motion plus is only adding to the wii mote what it should have had on launch, and it's still not as great as Sony's new motion sensing remote.

It looks like a dildo if you ask me...
But it seems like a good idea, thus far.

Meh... I'll go for natal, but that's just because I'm a microsoft fanboy wink.gif

Natal seems like a vamped up version of EyeToy for me but im not saying it is bad. Project Natal seems to be aiming alot at the casual gaming market, maybe trying to scoop some of the Wii audience. I just can't see myself playing any 'proper' games using the Natal system. The PS3 Motion controllers look like they are also aiming at the casual market but I can see myself playing 'hardcore' games on it aswell, much like the Wii can.

If you are looking for a new console to buy, at the moment I recommend the PlayStation 3, expecially with the recent price cut and slim model comming out, the PlayStation 3 Slim will be $299 in USA, $499 in Australia (I don't know the rest). Overall you get a better package with the PlayStation 3, Blue-Ray player (360 dosn't have), Built in Wireless (360 dosn't have, but you can pay an extra $100+! for an adapter) and Free Online Play (Xbox 360 has a better online network but you have to pay, The PlayStation Network is getting better though).

The problem with the PS3 slim is that it isn't backwards compatible. Do you know how many MORE they would sell if people could use this to replace their old and breaking PS2? I would, and I know plenty of other people would as well. It would add replay value to the console, and maybe people would make more than a licensed game every other month.

Actually, I heard somewhere that Project Natal could also be used with the controller, and it would only be used to enhance the experience, not define it. That's what all add-ons should try to do. Enhance, don't define.

I do. Lot's of people do. The quality is amazing. How much is a standalone blu-ray player? For 300 bucks you get a PS3 slim that plays blu-ray.

I think they Sony will play this out much better than Nintendo. I probably won't use it, but eh.

And what's wrong with Animal Crossing? The first two were great. City Folk blew chunks though.

For 300 dollars and also play cutting-edge video games? Blu-ray is the replacement for DVD. Most that can afford/get one does so because it is amazing. Blu-ray movies are usually hard to get at Blockbuster for new releases because everyone tries to rent blu-ray which says a lot about the demand.

Seems everyone wants to try to steal some of Wii's popularity ;) I always thought of PS3 and Xbox 360 as the "Hardcore" gamer consoles. I can't see a hardcore gamer wanting to wave a controller around to pop bubbles :P

How about more immersible aiming such as a gun or sword that wii failed to deliver on.
