I'm gonna soon try and read lots of steampunk novels such as The Difference Engine. If you've read any books of that genre then let me know what you thought of those books (which would you recommend I read, which should I stay way from, etc). The Manual of Detection definitely intrigues me, although I think I should read some of the classics first.

Hi Ren,

How about Jules Verne... 20,000 leagues under the sea??

Also, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a great read, with a really nice concept and has lots of visual ideas.

Just two I thought of after reading your post.

Thanks,

Vonie

Depends on your definition. I personally consider 20,000 Leagues to be a classic Steampunk precursor and Gentlemen to be a Steampunk graphic novel, so to call them steampunk would seem to me to be perfectly reasonable.

Closest thing to Steampunk I think I've read is Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series. Which really only has some themes in it. Was good the four years ago I read it but I've since lost interest.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is definitely steampunk.

Anyways, I'll admit I'm not a huge reader, but I love reading. I suppose I just prefer TV and movies, so I don't read enough.

The best I could do is recommend a few steampunk esque TV shows, which I will if you want me to.

The Mortal Engines Trilogy are some good steampunk novels, can't think of any others...

While I'm primarily looking for novels if they are worth watching then Steampunk movies/TV shows would be appreciated.

What I was going to suggest!

Fever Crumb was released recently, and that was a pretty good read.

Some of the books by Ian M Banks are a teenie-weenie bit steampunky (The Bridge & Walking on Glass) - but most of his are more SciFi. I enjoyed his books; but then I am unpleasant.

Micheal Moorcock wrote some steampunk novels -(The Steel Czar and/or Count Brass) which I think I read when I was about 12.

I was going to suggest that too >.< They're really great books,

P.S. It's not a trilogy, there's a fourth one.

I quite like the Bartimaeus Triology. It's humourus and sort of actiony. I also recommened Bravo-Two-Zero.
