Full Version: Mechs can easily be a playable race...

Considering it's a sci-fi genre game we have here, I am... befuddled at why people say Mechs will not be a playable race.

Personally I hope they are... and there are a few ways that can happen.

1) Borg style... since JaGex says the game was originally based around the mechs, I doubt that they would be evil as a playable character.

2) Massive AI... The humans or a different race create the Mechs to help them with fighting... Mechs AI becomes high enough to where some bad-ass Mech king guy decides that the war is stupid, and pulls the Mechs out. For different reasons they [the Mechs] start building other Mechs and increase the Mech population... some will have different beliefs and move out to form even other Mech settlements. The main Mechs will support peace... while other Mechs will be on the frontline defending themselves from whatever race created them, (and also attacking the race; this said race would be pretty mad at the Mechs actions and want to try to destroy them all in return.)

But.. I guess opinions are opinions.. what do you think on it?

EDIT: z0mg I are forgetted the period at the end of sentence!!!!11!!

Well, Mech and "Robot" may have different meanings...

It always ticks me off actually, when people mistake the two.

First Paragraphs on Wikipedia on the two.
QUOTE
Mecha, also known as meka or mechs, are walking vehicles controlled by a pilot, often appearing in anime, science fiction, or other genres involving a fantastic or futuristic element. Mecha are generally, though not necessarily, bipedal, with arms, hands, and fingers capable of grasping objects. A mecha that approximates the shape of a human body allows the use of martial arts movements and swordsmanship, ceremonial acts of honor, saluting, and other human mannerisms that cannot be performed using a tank or airplane.

QUOTE
Robot is a virtual or mechanical artificial agent. In practice, it is usually an electro-mechanical machine which is guided by computer or electronic programming, and is thus able to do tasks on its own. Another common characteristic is that by its appearance or movements, a robot often conveys a sense that it has intent or agency of its own.

Basically, Mechs are a piloted vehicle, giant robots. They wouldn't be a race, rather, they would be a type of thing our characters can use. In my Fan-Fiction, the main characters are assigned some Mechs to use for warfare.

Robots, have artificial intelligence, and may act independently... So they are very much likely to be a independent race. Also in my Fan-Fiction, the Cybernetics are the All Robot Race Faction.

While some see them as the same, I see them as completely different... Mechs aren't a race, but Robots are. thumbsup.gif

Meh... it would just anger me if this turned out similar to Steel Sentinels.

You chose race - (not apart of SS)... get in the Mech... PvP/PvE... Rinse and repeat.
I'd like to think Mechs would be smart bots are something that you can control as a player... not a 'race'.

It certainly wouldn't cause me to quit if Mechs weren't playable... but I might throw in some disappointment.

If mechs are a race, they had to have been created (AI) i believe they will be tools etc

Bladepaul
I think Chuck Norris will be a playable race.
killrrhubarb
Mechs, as Elite Zeon said, have to be controlled by a pilot, so therefore could not think by themselves and create their own race.
However, Androids, robots and the suchlike do not have to be piloted, meaning that these could indeed be playable characters.
me9374
Mechs are robot suits in which a lifeform/human/living thing controls a bionic robotic suit.
If your talking about androids being a race, then you may be half correct.

mechs don't live, they are like cars, cars don't live and get controlled by humans.

owned.
Saradane
Meh you wouldn't call this game MechScape if it didn't have Mechs in it so it's safe to say we will be seeing some. However perhaps Jagex doesn't use wikipedia and these Mechs have AI.

This is a Sci-Fi game we're talking about..
We will be looking a variety of aliens, distant lands and flying ships...

I think wether a large mechanical suit can walk on it's own or not is the last of these folks worries...

Mech:

Unless the other races have some pretty bomb weapons and defence..I don't think they stand much of a chance.

I see them more as being a boss.

I really don't like the idea of 'MechScape', the name, anymore.

The two options we look at are stated here. A race, or NPC/MOB.

To have a game titled after one specific race or NPC is illogical and somewhat biased. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD CHANGE THE NAME JAGEX!

And I do agree with you. If the Mechs are a race then there will need to be some sort of penalty to lower their destructive powers. I am sure Jagec will balance the game, otherwise we will get rocket spammed. I can imagine the mass lagg now...

A NPC? Well I just don't think that they would do that. Imagine MountainTrollScape. down.gif

But then again 'Rune'Scape is either named after a stone or armour that is not, any longer, anything special.

As said...

Mechs would be a vehicle, that one can pilot...

The topic is rather actually dealing with the Human-Sized Robots, being a separate race. Too many people are mistaking the two names as mounts and races...

Robots as the Race-

Mechs as a type of vehicle.

I think that the only reason they chose the name mechscape is because it was sci-fi like THEN they worked on devolping the game

None of the current concept art has had any sign of a Mech in it leaving me skeptical.

True, however there's a Mech on the "MechScape shirt."

If you really want to see mechs and what they would probably be like in this game, I would go to www.mechquest.com and play; I played it for like 3 days then I got bored, Im just bringing this up due to the mechs in mechscape probably being sort of like these mechs if the mechs are playable.

I have played mechquest, Its mehish, Its not what I would play all day and also I seriously doubt we will have animie styled
Giant robots, It wouldn't match. Im pretty sure there will be ROBOTs but not enough to be considered a "race"

Also I really doubt the name will be mechscape, Not only dose it have little to do with what the game is now but Its a VERY horrible name.

The idea of a 'man sizes' mechanoid, synthetic lifeform is plausible. I'm not talking about a cyborg either, I'm talking about something much more akin to the 'machines' of Matrix - a sentient species all of their own.

I have the worrying feeling that too many people read 'Mech' and start thinking of Gundams or MegasXLS.
Twibb
Mech is something you pilot, I'm pretty sure that's clear.

What I'm thinking is that one race, possibly a group of humans, decide that they're too weak, and they have to put robotic implants into some of their members. The robotic implants turn them into more cyborgs than humans, and then the robot part of them makes the cyborgs revolt, and the humans try and get them back.

To me, that just makes more sense.

It is commonly understood that a pilotable walking vehicle can be called a 'mech', but its root are in the Japanese abbreviation 'MEKA' (メカ) which is derived from the English 'mechanical'. The Japanese usage of the term is much broader, and "is extended to humanoid, human-sized robots" (source) so not necessarily just "something you pilot". Mod MMG's comment that "Certainly four years ago it would be sci-fi, robotic, and mech-like. But even now, that's just one of four factions, if you will." (source) makes me think that they are their own species as opposed to just utilised by a species (and that is why I put them forth as a playable species in my MSP article). If they closely resembled humans then the term 'android' would probably be more correct, but since there already is a human race they might want to differentiate them more.
EliteZeon
My argument just goes with the naming of the race...

I simply prefer Mech to refer to Piloted Robotics.

While Robots and Cybernetics to be referred to as the separate race.

My thoughts consider Androids and Cyborgs as human.
vincentkun
I like your opinions, I do see them as a race! Though in my personal opinion I would like to see them more like a vehicle or something that each species has, for example the human's mechs aren't going to be like the pliigli's mechs and so on.

Ateran
I'm thinking more like Android than Mech. Not like all 'MR. ROBOTO!' shit. More so like a human that's like metal. I mean like the more well built bots could be like a bit bigger with like a more muscular looking build while the more so....curvier females would be bigger towards the waist and chest. Considering Jagex has said on various occasions it will be more customizable.
Joee
Well I beleive that Mech's being playable characters in the game would be very good and more exciting for some users as you will be viewed as a big strong machine.
Although as it may be the Mech's may be used as tools to help ane exceed through some certain areas in the game and give advantages to other players.

Thanks for reading.

It is a possibility for andriods to be a playable race. Here is my theory of how the they and their planet would be created:

A quite small planetary system along time ago in a galaxy far far away was overcome with space debree, from old robots, ships, debree from insterstellar warfare, moldy tacos (space mold of course) space pie gone bad just stood their floating. Only one very small, useless, dead nanochip got caught inside the rather small stars orbit and had floated there for hundreds upon thousands of years...

Everything, no matter how small it is has a gravitational pull, from a diecesed space hampster, to an overgrown pliigi. And after a certain amount of time thousands upon thousands of tons of garbage had gotten to close to the orbit and the nanochip and were held there together. The first item (after the nanochip) that got caught was a disinhereted, indestrucable, circular space pod that would have ran right into the nanochip if it wasn't for it being in orbit as the 4th plannet in the planetary system, wraped itself around it and protecting the nanochip from sure destruction. After time, more and more trash, debree, and moldy space tacos got slammed into the ever growing trash planet making it the biggest planet in the planetary system.

The humans eventualy found out about this planet and since it was so wrought with trash they decided to haul their own trash to this planet. On one of their garbage ships was a quite large electrical cable decided to get a mind of its own. (everything was quite high tech for the humans) It eventualy convinced all the other ellectrical cables to have minds of their own. So the army of self reliant electrical cables, (you can see where this is going) decided to strangle every human on the garbage ship and take control. Since they didn't have arms they couldn't control the ship and crashed it into the planet it had been heading too anyway. A total of 5000 electrical cables survived the crash and intense atmospheric heat. They came out onto the planet and started burrowing into the ground. (becoming the first semi living things called W.O.R.M.s(Well off robotic monster) Well the very first self reliant W.O.R.M.. decided to be a little daring and bore to the core of the planet. It had got to the very hot inner core of the plannet, but they were heat resistant cables so the W.O.R.M. didn't really give a crap about the heat.It had made it to the inner core and found the smallest hole and wriggled through. Hovever, its tail got stuck. It streached just long enough to touch the nanochip, became overcome with infromation, and froze there for about 500 years.

And after all this time the W.O.R.M.s had learned to breed and eat trash. So they were the dominant species for all that time. Even though there had been a huge loss in the garbage industry they still got rid of their trash to this planet. (yet to be nammed) Well upon entering the gassy atmosphere the gasses made one of the ships go haywire and everyone was electrictuted to death on contact. It hit the planet leaving a huge crator the size of england. (it was a big big big planet) Since it was still electricly haywire the electricity stormed through the mostly dead and metal planet.

When the electricity had reached the center of the planet it touched the stuck end of the electrical cable, sending electricity to the dead nanochip. The nanochip had a very interesting piece of data on it. Before it had died it had the secret of life and knowlage on it. It was made to make more humans (like we needed anymore) It was brought back to life by the electrical surge on the planet Since the crashed garbage ship was still receving its power wirelesslessly it will always be sending off more electricity. So when the nanochip was brought back to life it gave life to some very loose debree at the top. It made very crudely created imitations of humans and other animals on earth with magnetism. Each human andriod had their own hopes, dreams, and skills. They were completely independant. Smarter than humans really. And after some time they decided they were ugly and found lasers to attach to themselfs to mold themselfs more attractive. So they were good looking andriods now. Well after about 100 years they wondered why there was a very powerful ruin and what it was for. So a brave little andriod ventured inside and found the thing that recieved the electricity wirelessly. When the andriod got both feet off the ground they lost power completely and died. So jumping was every mechs greatest fear. the little andriod made a wireless attachment and connnected to the same feed that the ship recieved electricity from. he shared this idea with all the other andriods and they all did it too. They could now do whatever they wanted. The andriods were independant.

Feel free to quote this everybody. It is the androids history and their rights to be a playable species!!!!!

I'd like to play MechScape as a prettier version of Iron Maiden from Quake II.
EliteZeon
I still prefer Mechs to a meaning of a complex vehicle, while Cyborgs and Androids are branches of the Hume Race.
Robots referring to mechanical beings that have a mind of their own, but aren't androids and don't have biological parts, and Cybernetics referring to a faction of robots that are entirely independent.

I always hate seeing girls and women being transformed into monstrosities or looking like their in pain, etc, etc. The images of the Iron Maidens in Quake 4 give me the goosebumps as well.

Anyways...
I searched quite a bit for some Cyborg chick image, with similarities to the Iron Maiden... unfortunately, nearly all of them not satisfying the half-flesh and half-mechanical attachments and adjustments to the skin, flesh and bone. A number of them were fetish images as well...

Anyways, after a search being longer than it should be... All I got was this image to show to you.

Sorry...

Maybe I should try designing a "prettier Iron Maiden" some day...
