A design of my MS Fan-Fiction character, Lieutenant Argnaz. I've actually made her design a month ago, but I didn't feel satisfied, and thus never posted it up... but now I find it much better than my next piece.

I thought I would try experimenting with realism... and decided to make her a realistic portrait... with my scanner in the junk yard.
Unfortunately... it came out horrible in my eyes... even with tracing out a female face for the face's outlines. Her reptilian styled ears were too complicated to paint, so I scrapped them completely in the portrait. The lips... I need to learn how to make them already... Along with painting hair correctly...
Failed Realistic Portraithttp://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa4/Eli...tExperiment.jpgAlso, unfortunately, this happens to be the most realistic looking face I've created so far... perhaps if I had a hand-drawn line art first... and wasn't using simply a mouse...
What do you guys think?... I could use some possible advice or just general thoughts.
Edit-Realistic Portrait Reattempt with large style change...

It's much better than I could ever do, I'll say that.
Me painting on the computer (much less drawing) is like giving a deaf child a guitar and telling him to play a tune.

I'll agree to the part that it does look alien-ish. But it does not look attractive and I would probably get nightmares from looking at it.

Second pic is horrid yeah...
I think I'll try another redesign later... more similar to her first image... or just leave her at the first one, which I think kinda looks attractive.

Hmm... I wouldn't say that the second pic is "horrid"... but it IS different compared to your normal art style (sorry, I gave your dA Gallery a view ^^; ).

Hehe, I blame my school for never giving the art classes I signed up for... so I am trapped with the Anime Artstyle, since it is the easiest to create, and find guides and "How To"s on the web.
I need to find some more realism guides...

Well there are a good amount of realism guides out there... but a lot of them cost money. Good ones, anyways (but then again, most quality products cost money, lol). And as far as anime being 'easy'... I beg to differ. I epic suck when it comes to faces and hands. XD
Some advise for realism but take it with a grain of salt because your better then me as it is. Take some photos and then try to copy then by holding the photo in your hand and making a replica on the computer. Unfortunately it doesn't help built the skills for realistic types of drawing for objects that aren't really real in the first place.

Alright, I have decided to give her another go with a realistic portait, using nothing but the GIMP and my broken mouse...
This time I traced a general construction lines of another artwork, and began putting my own things into it... concentrating more heavily on the lineart this time around... as well as going much more slowly.
Current WiP-

Might have to redo some things here and there.

awesome, keep going. I always hate having to start off as it's generally the hardest part. Once you get something down on paper it get's easier to add on to it.

By alien do you mean foreign, strange, exotic or extra-terrestrial?

Nice but try and keep it in proportion, one of the hands was a bit smaller than the other and you need to get the hips a bit bigger and maybe make the torso a little smaller. Also I saw you mentioned using a mouse, prehaps you'd like to invest in a tablet? They range from £40 - £2000, but worth it!
Thanks, -Felix

Don't have a job, allowance, and any money for a tablet... but I REALLY want one.
My parents are AGAINST any of my practices of art... so... I am not gonna get a tablet any time soon...
But, aye, I need to work on body proportions more.
Here is the finished portrait-

Why does the human have reptile sensory organs? Is this the horrid product of some genetic engineering project, by some sick, twisted scientist who wanted to create an organism so awful that he could watch it suffer?

Erm no...
She is a Saurian, which in my Fan-Fiction, they are a major race branched from of the Ani-Humes, which are aliens in the Milky Way that are basically look like half-animal and half-humans. The Saurians, look basically half-reptilian and half-human.
An odd coincidence, is that all planets that hold intelligent life in or around the Milky Way, have a strong resemblance to things in human mythology. Strangely, as well, all the other planets holding intelligent life also have the same species in their own ancient myths.
Lieutenant Ninus Argnaz, of the MW Federation, here is actually quite kind and polite once you get to know her.
