Interesting quote from an interview with a Jagex concept artist. Thanks to Psioptics for the tip-off.
RuneScape Media: "Mechscape has recently been announced by Jagex. Are you working on any artwork for the new game? If so, how does the style of the images vary from those made for Runescape?"
Mod Zephyri: "MechScape has its own dedicated team of concept artists, modellers and animators, so I've not worked on any of the concepts. I do get to see them from time to time though, and I can say that they look pretty amazing, the concept team there has done a brilliant job of defining the MS universe."

Kind of hard to think of anything other than Star Wars since the release of the latest Concept Art.
However the new RS Concept Art looks really sweet. Finally, a semi-scary Vampire that someone can be at least a little afraid of ha.

Strange... I read this a few days ago, after I had the sudden urge to look up "Jagex Concept Art" on Google, and it brought me to that interview.
Thought it was a little old, so I shrugged it off.
Looks like I may have stumbled across something before most others have.
In anycase... those new depictions of Count Draynor make me want to redo the quest again...
As for the Desert City... just seems to remind me of a Space Western thing, not of Starwars or Firefly, or anything else specifically. To me, MechScape may seem to be heading into all types of Sci-Fi genres. Space Western, Steampunk, Cyber Punk, and all sorts.

Well, if you combine the desert artwork and the Pligi artwork it indicates that what they are going for is variety.

well, in my opinion, so as long as they dont have any kind of lightsaber or laser/plasma sword in the game, i think mechscape would do good to heavily borrow from things like star wars, star gate, star trek, and even firefly and maybe even The 5th Element, etc, as well as space western themes and such.

Of course, concept art always looks pretty. A screenshot however would really determine whether they are actually able to make good concept art look good in game.
I like the fact that they have a well defined universe though.

Note use of "MS universe" (as in multiple worlds?).

No probably more like multiple planets. Unless that is what you mean, but world != planet.

Sorry if I was imprecise. Definition I'm using (

QUOTE
Noun - world (countable and uncountable; plural: worlds)
...
3. (countable) An inhabited planet.
Example usage: Our mission is to travel the galaxy and find new worlds.

I wouldn't mind them borrowing from other series and such but originality is something I would look forward to more. Granted I love those things but something new expands the mind and I love that even more!

I just want (well-placed and hilarious) references to Star Wars, to be honest. The use of items/places/whatever from any of the famous sci-fi movies/shows is up to Jagex and I really don't care if they use any so long as they use it to make the game awesome.
