This has been discussed previously, especially on this thread. The important thing is that people would be able to come up with new display names for MechScape without having to make a new account as well as potentially being able to make new shorter names which would not of previously been possible (e.g. using characters which were not allowed in account names but will be in display names).

There's only one username I'd want (dunno if it's already taken), but I can't imagine changing one of my accounts name to suit it.

They guessed it would be out this summer, now they guess this year.

I can't really imagine changing my name so suddenly, as I like it. I can see players who just made a new account using the name change system rather than making a new account so I guess it's going to a pretty decent update for new players.

I wonder how this will work with frozen account names. And maybe they'll allow you to delete old accounts?

I honestly have no clue if Xela's taken. I don't think it is but there is at least one other active player who uses it in their handle - Xela Yrag, some slayer guy that I stole the IRC handle from.

Unique would mean only names that aren't already taken.

Although my username is pretty cool and I've gotten quite a few good comments about it; I really want to change it. A lot of people, including my RuneScape friends, know me by Dizzy and so I am going to try and find a good name with Dizzy in it.

I guess late 2009 means next year? Hopefully they release MS before this Name Change thingy. Can anyone else see issues with name changing? If my friends kept changing their names I'd have no idea who they were.

The name Zezima is already taken (funnily enough by Zezima) so people won't be able to use it.

Although, I do quite like my name as-is; I have no real desire to change it other than to shorten it to match my usual handle.

To be honest I don't see the point of the display name update, like someone has already stated, if so people can have the same display names, we will have five-thousand Zezima's and if they have to be unique, it will be like display names, all the good ones will be snapped up quickly and we will end up in the same situation as we are in with account names, you have to put numbers and letters and shit to get remotely close to what you desire.

Either way, it seems pointless to me, but that's just my opinion (no, I cannot spell)

My guess is that because display names will have a larger character set and allow more characters there will be a larger pool of potential names, so it will take longer for them to be all used up.

I really want to change mine... My current username is a word in my language, and it still has a number at the end of it... it's so lame...

Name changing with special charatecters would be a neat update, in my personal opinion. I would love to have a VERY unique name that I could go with and walk around. I reckon' this update will not only benefit the majority of the players but mainly the famous players of Runescape so that after the name change, players will not recognise the new names of those "VERY" famous players, hence giving those "famous" players a way to skill without being bothered, at all.

A name change system is a terrible idea. I really hope they don't release that. otherwise they may lose some players. Who would want to see like 10,000 players with the same name? It would be too confusing.

Mod MMG has already confirmed that names would have to be unique, so 10,000 players with the same name just would not happen.

A new name system is an interesting idea, though I could really care less for it. I'm fine with my name, so this update will effect me in no way whatsoever.

I guess they will change this later again, like they do often.

The main reason for this system is to get out the offensive names. So users who have broken this rule before they've made something against it, are able to change it.

I think the point with display names is not to take someone elses name (you can't, thats what unique means!) but to be able to improve your own with special characters to make it more unique.

think about 'loadsa $$' or something like 'JMB ^_^' that would be pretty cool with the pictures people could have, also hopefully capitalization will be more respected, rather than being limited to one at the start of each word 'sNoOpY' could be unique to 'SnOoPy'...maybe thats too confusing tbh, theres clearly a balancing act so two people cant go around scamming with hard to report names.

The only name I want and will ever want is Joe.
The problem is this name is taken and will most probably be taken on alot of other things.
I think this name change system will be very good but there may become a few problems.
