Full Version: Artist wanted to draw our user badges

Underneath the names of some users there are 'badges' which signify something about the user, but for now we only have two... but we want more!

If you are willing to create a unique badge set for MSW (and grant us exclusive permission to use them) then please create a few sample badges so we can determine if your style is what we were looking for. These would want to be 32x32 transparent PNG in a style which fits with (although doesn't have to be identical to) our existing badges which were made by PoultryChamp:

The first two new badges we need are for art contest winners and general 'points' badges which represent the amount of points people get from competitions and such. For the art contest it could be a bronze, silver and gold rosette/trophy/badge (preferably with something to show it is for the art contest, like having a paintbrush in the trophy cup). For the points rosette/trophy/badge it would also be bronze, silver and gold and would want to look distinct from the art badge.

Badges we want and ideas for what they could look like:
Art Competition: (See above)
Points: (See above)
Events Team Member: Clock and/or calendar (esp. analogue clock), timepiece, From chess a knight a queen an a pawn overlapping (alternating between black and white, like vista chess symbol), a real life conical party hat, Futuristic looking sextant or an imagined navigation computer on a space vessel
Writer: A quill (possibly ink), feather pen and ink bottle, Quill and inkpot and parchment, a pencil, pencil over paper with top right corner folded over, Projected keyboard (the kind that is projected onto any surface via a laser - probably a bit obscure), typewriter
Content Researcher: Magnifying glass, binoculars, flasks, test tubes / laboratory, open book with things coming out of it, guy holding magnifying glass to eye
Language Team Member: Flag of country, speech buble, globe, holding hands (as in assist system logo), globe with analogue watch over it, Picture of the UN headquarters, "Cartoony" Earth
Technical Team Member: Spanner; Something computer-related; Something code related; Something geek-related
Moderator: Police hat, sheriff badge, robocop stick figure, futuristic looking police badges, judge with gammal and stand
Administrator: Something cool (is a crown too obvious? maybe some sort of official seal, not sure)
Badge for guessing release date: Calendar?
Lord John
I'm just wondering if the artist would get anything out of this, probably a question a few people might like to know the answer to.

They'd get recognition (I'd make a topic thanking them), but I don't think we have any money to pay people so as with mods, writers, etc it'd be voluntary. Might be able to give them some 'points' in the points system, tho and they'd have bragging rights (e.g. in their signature). So yeah, if someone awesome who has the time and skills comes along and decides they like MSW and want to help out then that'd be great, but otherwise it'll just not happen. Of course, if we ever end up having a graphics team position then it'd look great on their application form. PoultryChamp is an artist and some day she may have time to draw them, but it could be a long while before she has time (as important stuff like backing up the site, etc, always ends up at the top of the pile).

Well I felt compelled to make something. This one is in relation to the "Writer" badge. Made 100% in MS Paint, as a result I cannot make it transparent myself.
Whether I try to make the others is another thing :S (There are a lot of them.)

EDIT: Quickly changed the ink pot.

EDIT 2: I've made one for the Events as well. Tell me if you like them and I may continue with more :)
Miriado
I'll get around to doing them.
I like your writer one John.

Art competitions should be dealt with in this manner.
If a contestant wins they get a little badge that goes under all their info and stuff and they also get a userbar showing which competition they won and what the theme was etc, etc, etc. Then if that contestant has won more than once they would just keep the same badge except they would get another userbar to include in their sig if they choose to do so.

Edit:
Writer Icon -

Art Contest Badges:
Normal Colors - (If you decide to do my idea)
Gold -
Silver -
Bronze -

I left on the black outlines because I think it looks more bold for this darker forum skin. I could change them when/if the skins are updated.
Points Trophies:
Gold -
Silver -
Bronze -

It's kind of hard to make the icons without knowing what color the background is :C
Lord John
Thanks :) I realise that the shield is too dark and kind of hides the black horse.
Shadow of Sofia
Very sadly, I am no artist ermm.gif But I would love to see the others when they come out.
Miriado
I did the writer's badge seeing as it seemed to be the easiest. I did it with 8 colors and no perspective (3D like) but I can reduce/add colors or make it 3D if need be. I can also add shadows if you want although then it'd kind of be more of a picture rather than an icon or badge.

Edit: I'll update my first post as well.

I'll work on some, wish me luck tongue.gif
EliteZeon
*Looks to the right of my signature.*

Well I made that April Fools badge a while ago, in which a number of other users used as a temporary one...
I'll give my hand at creating some of these badges once given the opportunity... or once I figure out what the hell to do.
Miriado
I made some for the Art Contests.
Normal Colors -
Gold -
Silver -
Bronze -

I'll update my first post as well.

Could you explain the points system better? I don't fully understand it.
Spire
Here's some language badges

What are all the flags I would need to do?

I think doing these on paint are easier than the way pc is doing them, because I have no idea how to do it her way confused.gif

She's probably doing them in Photoshop with gradients and such. I don't think that would work for all these icons though because the anti-aliasing limits the amount of things you can put in with just 1024 pixels to work with. It'd be better to have them all the same style rather than some anti-aliased though.

When the system is implemented then competition winners will get points (and in some cases people who come second and third get a few points but not many), and there will be a special competition badge which will represent how many points they have. For example caption contest winner would get 5 points, runner-up would get 3 points. When those people get up to 10 points then they will get a bronze badge, when they get up to 25 it will be silver, then at 50 it will be gold. So people who are active in competitions and in-game activities would therefore accumulate points which would give them an increasingly cooler user badge, instead of each activity giving a badge which would just result in way too many badges. However, some big competitions such as the old art competition would have custom badges instead.

I kind of understand but I think that having a sort of "rep" system would be more effective. Winning art competitions could just be added in benefits of userbars as well as a few rep points. The choice is yours though I really don't know what these forums have the capability of doing and it might get a bit chaotic.
I'll just make some Gold, Silver, and Bronze cups.
Lord John
It'd probably be easier if you just assigned those who wanted to do it with a few badges to make. That way no single person has to make every single one.

EDIT: Removed the crest to see how it looked and put the MS forum colour as the background (not transparent) just to see what it would look like.

urantis
the person who created the badges should make a badge that signified that they made the badges, ya'know for recognition biggrin.gif
don't know how that would look though

i think i'll try to make some...
Daimenw
I know they arent Da Vinchi but here lol.

So if someone accumulates more then 50 points will they just start another badge?

Honestly, I stand by my opinion that we should just take our time and let Poultry make the badges. Having other users make them sort of cheapens the excitement confused.gif

Or the person who made the badges should have another person make the "badges badge" for the badges they made.
Badges is an odd word.

Anyway I made some trophy things for the points and I left on the outlines because I think it looks more bold for this darker forum skin. I could change them when/if the skins are updated.
Gold -
Silver -
Bronze -

I updated my first post with everything I've made so far.
I think I've made enough if you want me to make more just ask.
Daimenw
....Mine look crap... here..

AetherSound
I made a "cartoon" earth a while ago that was used for work, but is now not needed.

Note: I forgot the RBG pink color to make the background transparent...
Spire

Here's something I did in like 10 minutes for the art one, not much.
Lord John
In relation to Miriado's cups, I think you make the ribbon go behind them.
I personally think the cups should look more like this:

NOTE: I did not make this cup or pendant, so it cannot be used. It is from an pixel art forum that I am part of. It's just an example.

I would be able to make much more detailed things with better linework but I'm limited to a very small workbase. More than 8 colors probably wouldn't look very well.
If it were 50x50 that would lead to a lot more options and creative freedom and I could make things like that.
1024 pixels is a lot less than 2500 or even 2304 like the ones you posted. It's not up to me though.

I love pixeljoint.
It'd be cool if we could use things like this tongue.gif

Edit:
I made a new Pliigi icon based off of this.
DawnCode

Is this what your kind of looking for? That's the german flag if you can't tell. o.o
Dux Bell0rum
My failed attempt :p

EliteZeon
Also made one for the mods-

Kinda tricky to get what you want in it... not used to making images as small as these.
RPGLover
I prefer Miriado's badges!

HE'S THE ONEEEE..:p
Oscar
Yes Miriado's badges are quite spectacular, I love the writing one biggrin.gif well done, keep them going though!!!
EliteZeon
Alright, here is a badge for the person that guesses the MechScape release date, or for the Events Coordinator-

And here is one I made for the Admins-

The Date Badge is pretty much a futuristic clock thingy... And the Admin Badge is an attempt at trying to make an official seal, crossed with an air-force styled badge, with a generic Admin Crown...eh...
Revlis
Do you mind if it is cortoony, such as it being done in flash?
EliteZeon
Alright, and I also just made 3 trophies.

Generic 3rd Place Contest Winner Trophy

2nd Place Art Contest Trophy

1st Place Art Contest Trophy

The designs were inspired by the sample trophy shown by Lord John. On the second and first place trophies, they have paint brushes in front of them.
CelestialDawn
EliteZeon badges own.
melmelcom
I might be able to make some/draw some because I like this thread ^_^

I just got an idea now hehe I'll post it later when I am done drawing it ^_^ I hope it gets in the badge system :D

----

edit: Ok, I'm really mad.. I created a badge but when uploaded...it just crushes itself :(

Well my idea was...

Badge Creator

If you made a badge and it got picked, then you recieve this badge
Oscar
Loving the trophies EliteZeon although the Events thing looks too like a Hippy Badge in my opinion.
Lord John
I like Elites because they are most like the original style that PC made.

Ya this mod one looks alot like the Pliigi one. So I vote Elite's.
EliteZeon
Hehe thanks yall biggrin.gif

Here is one I made for the Technical Team Members-

Supposed to be a generic gear, with some data looking things in it. However, I kinda traced the outline of something I found on google to get the main outline...

I don't think they want mine seeing as how they consistently ban me :P

I like Elite's because the generic style of his make the holder known, but they aren't more flashy than another one or w/e. I think they need to be more specific though. So it's easier to tell what they are for.

You are consistently being banned? Huh? I think I'm missing something here...

I think that there needs to be a "style", or else there won't be any unity. They'll all look good, but they won't look professional.

EliteZeon badges own.

I agree =) Awesome badges..shiny badges are awesome cool.gif

Btw, EliteZeon, your sig is inspiring me to get into Photoshop again <.< damn u!! lol ( i have no time but i want to make something :( ). Good luck on getting your badges chosen =)
EliteZeon
That sig of mine and these Icons I am making are actually all made in GIMP.
Here are some more badges I made.

Events Coordinator Badge-

Remade- Release Date Guess Badge-

Felt that the older one didn't have as much to it as to compared to my other badges... I think I might have to remake a number of them after reading through all your suggestions... but I also want to see icons presents by other users as well...
subzero
Just make em shiny and look 3Dish, and you're all set :D. (Oh and awesome color combo's). Also make sure people can tell what they're looking at :D. The events coordinator badge..no idea what that is..good luck ;)

Well, my eyes are being raped by the flashing bright lights right now, but I guess this thread says make some badges? :P
I'm guessing you want PNG files, right? I'll try to make some, and are there any specific badges you would like? Like a Top Poster, or Best Information Finder?
Gratz on 100k posts, by the way :D
