Click to view attachmentHello everyone! I am VERY new to this site

, as membership wise goes. I have been coming here very often though to read up on the News. The other day I saw that someone had made a 3d model of the Lava Harvester in SketchUP (LOVE that program), and it was amazing!!. I am a "designer" at my company, so I thought I would give it a go!! The modeling was done in AutoCAD2007, and the renders done in 3dMax. The modeling took about 12 hours or so (Kept changing things) and the renders took about 15 minutes per. I would appreciate your thoughts and comments. I know some of it is not extreemly accurate, but I based my 3d model off of the one Jagex sent to this site, and since it is kind of "iffy"(blurry), i just improvised. I greatly apreciate any advise!!

PICS!!
Hmm i can not seem to find a way to show pics in here so I will post this with an attachment and hope it works....
EDIT: I think i got it!! The reason mine is so nice is....Jagex just bought it from the factory :D Thanks for all views and posts!!

Awesome work! You've put a lot of detail into it. I don't think Jagex need to bother modeling it themselves anymore...

And, welcome to MSW.

Edit: What's the polycount btw?

One word; wow. I really like it. if you want to post pictures, just upload to tinypic.com/imageshack.us/photobucket/other sites, and use the forum code.
Wow, I really like that. One of the main areas of difference between your one and Jagex's is the style. Their Lava Harvester is very run down and battered, and looks like it needs a good clean, whereas yours is sparkly and new. Perhaps this is what it looks like brand new from the factory.
Are you going to have a go at the Mech which they feature in their GFX team logo?

Which one is it your refering to? Thanks for comment as well :D
I'm talking about:

The image on the left and right of that Jagex GFX Team Logo are for FunOrb and RuneScape respectively, so we believe the Mech in the centre is for MechScape. Alyx did a
render inspired by it and I turned it into a
wallpaper.
Note: I've added your render to the gallery page.

@Ren - I don't think he should model it again... If he decides to create another, it should be done on something that hasn't been modeled before IMO.

Haha this looks like crap because i didnt size the textures, and did a fast render...but i present you with!!!.....

That's brilliantly done, both the pristine condition and the run down one. Nice work! :)
As for something else to do, there's
This 'mining vehicle' concept art that has 2 views, though it is rather similar to the Harvester you've already done.
Darren B's gallery also has a few images with multiple views, such as the
weird Pliigi stuff]. I don't think anybody has done renders of his stuff (besides Jagex). In the gallery you can click an image to get a larger version.

Well, that's not as bad as it could be. But I guess it's more for eye-candy, not in-game rendering.

Man... With all these models, we could put together our own MechScape!

no these are done in AutoCAD 2007. However I cann't find a reason why this could not be done in SketchUP, because your "viewres" and "facetres" (AutoCAD commands setting the "smoothness" of shapes) can be achieved in a 3rd party rendering software. I will redraw this or another model this weekend in sketchup and if you all like it will do the tutorial....what will I draw....a surprise!! However a lot of people find this to be difficult, or too time consuming. I will tell you that I am 21 and already have a college degree in Design Tech.....so as you can tell dfesign is my life...i love it. I do it for a living and fun :D It took many-a-classes though to learn it all. All in all I had about 9 classes in AutoCAD, everything from "whats this program do" to "Advanced AutoCAD programing." .....sorry about the life story, regardless, I will draw something this weekend and render it keeping screen shots of what i do, and then I will make a guide. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask me. I know any program from Autodesk (CAD, 3dMax, maya...etc) inside and out, and SketchUp very well. Thank you so much every one for all the feedback on what Ive done so far!!

I see the frog. The lava vacuum is one leg, the thruster is the other leg, and the body of the harvester is the body of the frog.

A bit off topic, but the Pliigi stuff looks like Bellum from Phantom Hourglass o.O
Anyhow, that is one pro model xD Keep it up :)

Do you know Inventor?
If so, it would be freaking awesome if you did your next model in Inventor 2009. I'd even continue to wet myself if you did it in inventor, then shared all the files with us on the forum. It would probably take you way too much time though.

And I definitely prefer it rusty.
Great job on it! I like both of you vehicles. I like the run down one the most though. I would love to see more concept arts drawn in 3D. 3D art is so hard but when you are done you at least can get several images out of it. :D
Awesome again.

Heh, I would never have guessed that from the skill displayed there. I thought it would be something more like product design/modeling for nifty little hi-tech products and cool things like that. Kind of like concept models.
Ah well, for someone who has been modeling for less than a year you do have skill! Keep it up!

I already am, in theory. The only way is if I could get these models in Project Utopia's engine. Then you could actually see what it looks like in-game. I would have been willing to do it sooner, but until now our object system was upside down.
