Hey everyone =], I'm just curious if anyone has ever read the book Starship Troopers or seen the movie based off of it, also called Starship Troopers (1997).
Basically, the Book, and movie (though the movie is loosely based on the book), revolves around this guy called Juan (John in film) Rico. He's from a upperclass Earth family in the future, someday an Asteroid or meteor is sent by thus alien race know as "The Bugs" to his hometown and kills the community (along with his parents). Thus he joins the Federation military and the federation wages an interplanetary and interstellar war on the bugs. The book was published in the 1950's i believe, and it was and remains a controversial book due to elements it allegedly promotes such as Militarism, Fascism, Utopianism, and even Racism and the nature of humanity to constantly war and destroy with little remorse or regard to cultures far different then our own (which has happened throughout our history). Personally i enjoyed the movie, it does differ from the book in various ways from the way battles are described and carried out to treatment of soldiers and the conduct of the Bug War in general in terms of Human societal reaction and such.
Personally i recommend buying the movie, and the book. It's good for Case studies if your gonna do a parallel analysis on modern warfare and society with nazi germany among other things and a possible future by current trends type study. It's very intrigueing, very thought provoking, and just a very very good science-fiction story with many Parallels in line with i dare to say, 1984 by George Orwell, or perhaps the numerous parallels of Star wars and real life, among other stories.

I have never read the book but I loved your description of it. It definitely has a lot elements that that I would enjoy in a work of fiction. Hopefully my local library has the book, otherwise I might have to scrap my pennies together and buy it somewhere. I will be back with my review of the book in a few weeks. :p

Yes well, as i said before, i do highly recommend that people, such as yourself, do look it up and read it. and buy the 97 movie, there's 2 sequels but, the 1997 movie's pretty good in my opinion.

The beginning of that book was awesome(where the space marines are totally pwning the aliens), and the rest was too boring.
I went to my local library to find the book and according to the reference desk lady the book has been missing since 2002. Now my only option is to buy it somewhere, but I hate paying for books. :(

I hope that I'm thinking of the movie, but is the movie very gory if you've seen it? If so, I love that movie. ;) Never actually read the book though.

Mm, I don't consider it really overly gory but, yeah there is alot of blood and people getting their heads, bodies, arms, hands blown off or incinerated by bugs or friendly fire.

Calling the aliens bugs reminds me of the Ender's Game series where they refer the aliens as Buggers. I read that whole series in a years time.
