Ren
If we ever get a chance to interview someone at Jagex over MechScape it would be great to have some intelligent questions from our members.

Since it could happen before or after release be sure to have some questions which aren't just asking about what the game will be like on launch. You should therefore ask questions about development or plans for the future too. It is often better to have open questions as opposed to simple yes/no style closed questions. You could categorise them as pre-release and post-release. Oh, and you could ask more general questions about Jagex if you wanted so long as it has relevance.

If you come up with more questions later then please edit your original post if possible.

My questions (so far!):
How have you approached the balancing act between drawing on the RuneScape and FunOrb brand and trying to differentiate MechScape as its own brand? Any plans for crossovers?

While MechScape is aimed at an older audience it is still appropriate for younger players. Have you ever consider it having rated content or the possibility of disabling the chat filter?

What are the reasons behind staying quiet about MechScape for so long? Did following this policy sometimes prove frustrating?

What do you feel are the main lessons you learned from RuneScape which you took into account when working on MechScape?

What are the origin stories of the game?

What MechScape updates have you got in store for us in the future?

Jagex has previously stated it would be tackling Real World Trading at a "core design level". Could you expand on this?

How are you handling player grouping and interaction in MechScape?

In your recruitment you have stated a preference for Anime fans. What influence has Anime had on the game?

There is plenty of opportunities to have in-jokes for sci-fi geeks. What sort of humour are you injecting into the game, or are you trying to keep it serious?

Do you think MechScape will ever be as big as RuneScape, or that it will cannibalise your RuneScape player base?

How did Jagex view the efforts of MechScape Central/World to research the game?

Do you feel that fansites play a vital role, and if so how do you intend to support them?

What are some of the most interesting problems and challenges you encountered during development?

What scope do you think MechScape has for emergent gameplay?

Can you tell us anything about what development methods and approaches you use (production streams, etc)?

How did you empower creativity?

How do you evaluate content quality and user reception?

Give us your pitch... Why should people play MechScape?

Do you intend to ever allow players to beta test new content to find problems?

Did credit card transaction companies threaten you that if you didn't get credit card fraud under control you'd lose their services?

How many people worked on MechScape?
EliteZeon
-Before the Release-
-What can you tell us of the usage of the vehicles within the game? How will they affect the game play, and how often must they be used?

-How would the character customization be? Would it be similar to that of RuneScape or even better? If we are to own vehicles and mechs, will we be able to customize those as well?

-About how much content would the Free Players obtain at the launch?

-In some other games, powerful and unique items and upgrades are available to Players, sometimes even the Free Players, which are purchasable for an account from a shop on the website or in-game. Would you have use of this system? And would players that don't have the real life money to pay for them be able to use in-game cash to pay?

-How would the leveling system be, as to compared to RuneScape? Would it follow long grind fests? Or would we find leveling up is quick and easy?

-Following the above question. Would we find the battle system and PvP system more balanced, and tactical? As to compared to having the highest levels to beat down your opponents in RuneScape?

-With the lores and storylines, would the old world of RuneScape or anything in FunOrb find its way into MechScape? Would we see familiar names and characters or histories?

-Where did you obtain your inspirations for this game?

I've got a few questions:

Will Mechscape have the similar playing style of Runescape, in terms of skilling, adventuring etc..?

What precautions have you taken to prevent the likes of macroing and real world trading affecting the game?

Will the pay to play subscription fees be more, less or similar to that of Runescape?

Will this game use a class based character system like World of Warcraft, or will it be similar to Runescape?
SuperStevee
I would ask:

When's your best estimate of a release date now?

Are you going to make a trailer before you release it?
Asfastasdark
What type of style game and graphics is ThirdScape going to be?
Darth Irule
why must you delay the game? Will you be more player friendly?
Insanitosis
Will there be a public beta, a member/moderator beta, or no beta at all?
Max
How long do you plan to support MechScape?
♥PT♥
I want to know If mechscape will have a tutorial like runescape?

Question:

I think it will get about the same, because it should be another team separate from RuneScape (maybe some crossing back and forth). But then again they have said RuneScape is going to be their main focus for the next four years so maybe it will get less updates. And since the game is just coming out I think it wont have the same amount of content that RuneScape has, JaGeX use a good amount of player suggested ideas.
Bandit
How large is the MechScape world in comparison to the RuneScape world?

Will there be actual tactics involved in combat?

How will skills be used, if at all?

How much content will "F2P" players recieve?

After release, what are some things on the JaGeX to-do-list?
Asfastasdark
How big of a role do vehicles play in MechScape?

Are there going to be races?
jrockman
Will there be only one playable race? I was really hoping there would have been more playable races in runescape (Elf,Human,Dwarf)
Ren
The possibility of an interview at some point is higher now. Post away with your pre-launch and post-launch questions about the games, its staff and its development.
Zheph
I have a few questions:

Can we expect to see Jagex Mods in-game early on, perhaps double checking for bugs and the sort? Making sure no one abuses any bugs they find?

Will clan chat be spread across both RuneScape and MechScape, so people playing both games can talk in the same chat?

Will the Player Moderators be Mods in MechScape if they are in RuneScape?

Will there be regularly organised or automatically schedualled in-game events like wars etc.? If so, what types of things can we expect to see?
mesheke
well first id be like"i luv u guys'' and then id be like "mr g ur my hero" then something like " can i have ur autograph" then id start badgering him about wars
Cydonian
Does mechscape focus heavily on combat?

-- Will mechscape have the mechanics for improved party gameplay?

---------- If mechscape nourishs party gameplay. will there be a general class dependance? (tank/damage/healer)

Are vehicles player owned or purely situational?

Is mechscapes gameplay intended to be a large grind or easy to learn/max out but hard to master?

Hope you don't mind me trying to answer this one.
I don't think Jagex are going to make MechScape a full grinding game. I'm sure Jagex are a bit smarter than that, according to what they've said, and i think that everything in the game is going to mean something to go towards something, but there wont be any pointless grinding (well maybe a tiny bit).

Well my hope is that it is not a pointless grindfest with no light at the end of the tunnel, I don't want to have to reach X just to cut a tree blink.gif . I'm hoping that the gap between Runescape and Mechscape is equal to or greater then the time era they are presented in. I'd really love to find a game that would take a hardcore gamer 2-3 weeks to reach a level cap and then spend the majority of the characters development doing accomplishments (obtaining gear and items by participating in Boss encounters and PVP events with a progessive line catering for beginners to the geared and experienced).
Zheph
Well Jagex did say that MechScape is going to be different from RuneScape in every aspect, so i think we can expect to see a very different game. That's what i've been basing all i've said recently on.

Note from Ren: Please stick to asking Jagex questions everyone!

Well is there a problem to answering one? At least it saves the person having to wait.
Rick Astley
Would the game has some puns in it?
And would they be from RuneScape and FunOrb since they pun each other sometimes?
Shield
I'd be interested to see all of Ren's questions answered, but in particular I would want to know:

  • When can we hope to see the launch of MechScape?
  • What are your ideas for player versus player combat?
  • How big are you planning MechScape to be?
FriskyFox
im sure everyone wants to know if we willl be able to use existing jagex nammes
Unin
Ive got a few,

Would the character creation be anything like RuneScape?

Would you be able to have one account, and different Characters?

Is there Pets at all in this game?
Stellar
I've got a question.

By any chance, has any amount of consumer suggestions had any effect on the game at all. Have we, the fans, impressed upon any amount of the game's title release. If so, could you give me a couple examples of the suggestions you have put into use (weapons, names, skills, traveling, gameplay, etc.)?
SuperStevee
Will there be different classes and races?
WillandGrace
how much did it cost to make mechscape?
girs30
Jagex,

Will you get rid of those Client Hacking Bots/ Color clicking bots? What will you do against it? Will you make it even more harder to connect to mechscape worlds? - (I mean the client enviroment)

What will you do against the account possible sharing / trading and the bank frauds as it happened in RuneScape?

Will be there a forum?

The last one...
You made some mistakes in runescape..What will you do to avoid those?
Jomihkie
Will there be clan support in MechScape? If so, what will it be like? If not, do you intend to implement clan support in the future?

What will the music and sound effects be like in MechScape?

Do you plan to have a beta as you did with RuneScape "2"?

When do you plan to upload the main MechScape website?

How much of the game will be available to free players?

How often do you plan to update the game? Once a week? Once a month? Other?
Sofee
If you had to rate Mechscape from 1-10(with 10 being the best, 1 the worst), what would it be?

Will MechScape at all be similar to RuneScape?

That's all for now.

fishaddock
will the controls be similar to runescape's controls, with a click-move/nteract system, or will there be an arrow key-move click-interact system?

will we get to fly, or just drive?

will we be able to drive at all?

can i do laser drive-by's in a PVP mechscape environment?

QUOTE (Asfastasdark @ Jan 16 2009, 07:19 PM) *
What type of style game and graphics is ThirdScape going to be?

They've already mentioned it'd be a Sci-Fi based game built from Java. From Java, you can't expect the best graphics, but you should see somewhat of the same quality of RuneScape's.

Thanks, bit they weren't talking about MechScape, they were talking about ThirdScape. This is a thread for questions, not answers - while we might think we know the answer, sometimes it is important to hear it officially from Jagex.
WillandGrace
will the mods from runescape be mods in mechscape?
or will you be chooseing a whole new bunch of mods?

Why "Scape" ?

Will Runescape/FunOrb names transfer over to Mechscape?

Did Jagex take a big risk creating and releasing MechScape during the financial crisis?

twistinthunder
my questions will be:

will free players get a "fair shake"/equal amount of stuff members have? or a least not so much less than members like runescape

will there be as many support skills be equal to the amount of combat skills? (for the skillers out there)

and finally:

will anyone be able to make a 'pure'?
Rainomed
1.As we anyone can tell from studying the history of mmo games, individuality is a big part of mmo success. With that in mind how will mechscape players be able to establish their individuality in the game other than name and initial character creation.
a few possibilities might be like

-Earned titles
-Unique stats on character worn items
-Temporary earned positions of power
-Ranking (seperate from level)
-Physically changing aspects of a characters appearance depending on accomplishment
(like when a characters strength gets to a certain level they now have the character custom option to increase physical size of avatar)

2. Has player real estate been taken into consideration, and if so how (other than theme) will it be different from Runescape.
For Example:

-Will players be actually stationed on a specific area on the map or will it be off map via teleport.
-Will players be able to build differnent types of structures within the set real estate area like machine shops and merchant shops ect.

3. Is the economy going to be as closley maintained as runescape or have different concepts for the economy been decided on completely setting it apart from previous titles

4. How many servers are you anticipating using on opening day and within a 1 year projection what do you predict will be the number of servers needed

5. Aware that there will be free and subscription based content, are the limitations going to be similar to runescape as far as limitations and interaction for example:

- Will there be free servers and subscriptions set servers
- Will subscription players be able to still go into free servers
-If subscribers are able to go into free servers will they be allowed to use their members items while on the free server. (not speaking of consumables that can be used on free players)
-Will subscriber and free worlds share an economy

My questions:
Will you let MechScape out now!?!
Let me play!?!
Will you rank me number 1!?!
Where do you live!?! =P
I like you. =P
Can you make lots of new games!?!
Do you like pie!?!
How much do you get paid!?! =D
Human NPC
-Will there be active Jagex Moderators, that have their own accounts as well as their regular Jagex Moderator accounts, that will play the game?

-With the age that MechScape is focused upon, how will this effect the strictness of the rules? (Will you be more forgiving and let more things slide than you have on RuneScape?)

-Being Java based, just how far will MechScape's graphics be from RuneScape?

-Will there be Player Moderators in MechScape?
Lachie
Do you think that users will move away from RuneScape once MechScape is relised and how do you plan to keep it so RuneScape stays as popular as it is with the addition of MechScape?

Can you shead any information on ThirdScape?
Ren
Various RuneScape stats can be levelled much quicker now than when they were initially introduced, which some argue lessens the achievement of early players. Do you expect the same to happen with MechScape?
Pliigi
Mod Mark Gerhard stated that there will be a MechScape beta for RuneScape Members, will this apply to FunOrb-only members as well?
Regor
1. Will MechScape have a similar leveling system like RuneScape?

2. Will Runescape players be able to contact players playing MechScape, like how Runescape players talk to FunOrb players?

Stellar
Anticipating a release as big as Mechscape must be a large task. With that said, there has to be a way for players to play your game, and that would be Servers (or Worlds.) Do you believe you have anticipated enough and set up the right amount of Servers for Mechscape?
How many Servers have do you plan to start out with, and will it be divided into Multinational, specific language based Servers, such as the German servers on Runescape.
Dux Bell0rum
In the February Q&A's, you mentioned that you were considering porting RuneScape to a console,
QUOTE
Q) John Snake - Is there any way to play RuneScape on the ps3, or are there any plans to make a version for that and other systems that would allow you to connect to and play RuneScape on ps3 or other game systems?
A) We are currently looking at consoles, exactly which ones IS unfortunately a secret :)

Source: http://forum.runescape.com/forums.ws?13,14,613,58401007

If RuneScape does get the option to play on console, would it be safe to assume MechScape will also have that ability as well?

Will Player/Forum Modship carry over to Mechscape?

Either way...Will there be Mods in Mechscape?
