Full Version: Jagex's mission statements throughout the ages
MechScape World > MechScape / Stellar Dawn > MechScape / Stellar Dawn Confirmed News
Ren
I thought I'd look through Jagex's forward-looking statements for the past several years.

2003:
QUOTE
Jagex has proprietary network communication and graphics compression technologies which are utilized in all its games. These technologies are continually evolving and form the backbone of our development plans.

RuneScape itself will receive a major core technology upgrade around the beginning of 2003. This upgrade will make RuneScape by far the most advanced Java game in the world and will enable the company to attack and achieve our ambitious targets.

Jagex intends to become a significant operator in all the major gaming markets. Developing and commercializing highly compelling persistent character games that appeal to a wide audience. Our ambition for 2003 is to exceed 100,000 subscribers for RuneScape and begin work on our second game.

Jagex has proprietary network communication and graphics compression technologies which are utilized in all its games. These technologies are continually evolving and form the backbone of our development plans.

RuneScape has been completely re-written in 2003 allowing 'RuneScape 2' to be launched in the first quarter of 2004. RS2 features a completely new games engine and vastly improved graphics for an even more fun playing experience. At the same time we have maintained the 'play anywhere' philosophy that is central to our offering. This upgrade makes RuneScape by far the most advanced Java game in the world and will enable the company to attack and achieve our ambitious targets.

We intend to become a significant online operator in all the major gaming markets worldwide; developing and commercializing highly compelling persistent character games that appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Our ambition for 2004 is to exceed 120,000 subscribers for RuneScape, to take RuneScape into non-english markets and to start a completely new game. By the end of 2004 we plan to be a games company that a lot of people are talking about!

2005:
QUOTE
We intend to become a significant online operator in all the major gaming markets worldwide; developing and commercializing highly compelling persistent character games that appeal to as wide an audience as possible, based on cutting edge technologies developed in house.

Our ambition for 2005 is to exceed 400,000 subscribers for RuneScape, to take RuneScape into other non-english language markets and to begin the development of a completely new game.

Jagex Limited is the Developer and Operator of the massively multiplayer online 3D adventure

Our ambition for 2006 is to exceed 750,000 subscribers for RuneScape and to launch in a further three languages.

2007
QUOTE
We intend to become a significant online operator in all the major gaming markets worldwide, developing and commercializing highly compelling online games that appeal to as wide an audience as possible, based on cutting edge technologies developed in-house.

Our aim for 2007 is to continue to develop and improve RuneScape, while at the same time taking RuneScape into other non-english language markets following Germany. And to develop further games using our technologies.

Observations
1. It seems to indicate that they've been wanting to make MechScape for a while, but it wasn't until 2005 that they started work on it (perhaps around the time Insight Venture Partners bought a 35% stake in the company) .
2. Note how they say they plan to release exciting products in 2008 *including* the FunOrb website. To me that means that they intend to release other exciting products in addition to FunOrb in 2008. This could mean MechScape, but it could also mean their mobile phone gaming service.

what can i say?
yet again, incredible!

but now, if they've been working on mechscape for 4 years already, we could be waiting another 4.. or not?

* In February 2001 they said one of the next things to be released was clan support. It didn't come out until 2007.
* In 2001 Player Owned Houses were "coming soon". They weren't released until 2006.
* They intended to start work on MechScape in 2003 but didn't until 2005.
* They originally said "Our other multiplayer games will be returning soon in a new suite, but updated and improved with many new features" in January 2005. Later they hoped for a Summer 2007 release of FunOrb. It wasn't released until 2008.

Jagex's track record on getting things out on schedule is pretty bad.

I don't know. They were originally hoping for a 2006 release for FunOrb.

whoa. mellow.gif
never knew that, so it does mean that there is a possibility that mechscape isn't going to be released until 09 or more...
Ren
The FunOrb delay could partly be due to them deciding to go all out with it, and make it a money-making thing.

thats pretty cool in 2007 and the first 2008 they said this

"And to develop further games using our technologies."

how exactly do you KNOW it's called MechScape? What if it was renamed to something like "SpaceBattle"?

Jagex already claimed a lot of websites that have MechScape in them,
and it it was class "SpaceBattle" it wouldn't be a very original name.
Since there should be a few games out there that have that kind of name.

Reasons I believe it is still called MechScape:
1. They have a registered trademark for the term MechScape (that covers online games) and recently added a logo to it. They haven't trademarked SpaceBattle or similar.
2. They have registered many MechScape-related domain names. I've seen no evidence of them doing such things for SpaceBattle or similar.
3. Their newly advertised post for a team leader on an "upcoming project" has the job reference MSTL (...or MechScape Team Leader).
4. The MechScape name makes use of their -Scape brand established through RuneScape.
5. If they were calling it something else they'd probably publicly state "We are not working on nor will we ever work on a game called MechScape".

On an old Jagex mock-up site they mention "FunOrbs", "SpaceCombat", and "RuneScape" as their main games. This could mean that MechScape's codename is SpaceCombat or that it used to be known as that, or maybe it means nothing considering FunOrbs should be FunOrb.

Nice, nice. I'll check the sources now.

Their recent Associative Producers job vacancy over at LinkedIn has an extra little section:
QUOTE
We are proud of our success and very excited about our future. With 2 great products released to date and a number of exciting projects in production, there really never has been a better time to join the team and become a part of our exciting story.

Trivia: The LinkedIn site gives the job the reference code 'assprod' and mistakenly 'this job is available only on LinkedIn'.

Interesting to see how they keep on aiming to create new language servers from as far back as 2004 but have only suceeded in the German one. Maybe the distraction of MechScape from 2005 onwards made this take a backseat?

Focus on MechScape and RuneScape HD could definitely have been a factor. While for a long time they have mentioned European language skills as a desirable attribute, I don't think they'd done any job vacancies until recently so they couldn't have been that serious on it until a few months ago.
Commet Blast
Ren you should become a online detective or somthing = p, amazing research = ).

Aenaid
Ah good call on the job vacancies. Interesting to see a focus on other language servers despite maybe the vast majority of RuneScape players being English speaking. I think they should make a poll of what language to do next instead of just jumping into one they want.

I noticed on the August update speak they mention some future projects, possibly a hint at MechScape?

The fact that most players are English speaking is the point. They want new players who aren't English-speaking. Asking existing players what language they want is pointless, because it would not help them expand their user-base.
Aenaid
Good point, I didn't think of it that way. Made me feel silly now lol. blush.gif

They could choose the languages that are the least chosen.
