Jagex have filed two new trademark applications; "Hack Idol" and "Just About The Gaming Experience."
Hack Idol:
QUOTE
List of goods or services
Class 41: Organising and arranging of competitions for developers of computer games programs; organising and arranging of competitions for developers of video games programs; organising and arranging of competitions for developers of interactive games software; organising and arranging of competitions for developers of entertainment software
Just About the Gaming ExperienceApparently they've decided to stick with the new name, which is a replacement for "Java Gaming Experts."

Maybe they've decided to move away from Java and to the consoles.

Well according to the trademark classification
(1) (2) it won't be a FunOrb game. The usual classifications Jagex uses for FunOrb games are 09, 16, 25, 28 and 41, however, Hack Idol's only classification is:
QUOTE
Class 41: Organising and arranging of competitions for developers of computer games programs; organising and arranging of competitions for developers of video games programs; organising and arranging of competitions for developers of interactive games software; organising and arranging of competitions for developers of entertainment software

developer competitions eh? I have no clue how they would spin that story on the front page of rs. no one would do it, few people are games developers.

Surely
Other Games would be the more suitable sub seeing as discussion for all other game developers fits in there?

I reckon it will be a competition about who can make the best level for a game.

Hack Idol sounds like a competition for people who can best hack Runescape. The prize for all people who enter is an instant ban.

Seems like Hack Idol is a competition, but still not sure on what they are wanting. By "hack" they could mean modify or they could mean circumvent security. Could it be anything to do with their long-term plans of allowing for third-party developers distribute their games through Jagex platforms?
Sidenote: SD General is usually the forum for anything relating to Jagex but not relating specifically to RuneScape and/or FunOrb.

Yes, it could be something like that. But why would they do it exactly? As a way of getting new security-savvy staff? To better their own security (either getting people to report glitches in the game or genuine security problems)? For fun?
Edit: To get amateur developers to make games for them to host?

I was thinking more along the lines of the RP they made on the funorb forum recently. Nothing to do with staff, an actual game for the users, but just not a Java or Flash or whatever app.

If it was a game instead of a competition then why was it registered solely under Class 41?

Would a time-limited game be a competition?
That's what I'm thinking. I'm just not typing like I actually have a brain.

I was thinking that "Hack Idol" will invole people trying to hack into their security systems, and whoever does it hte fastest/most effeciently gets to work there to improve them. Or maybe just a prize, and Jagex fixes there own systems.
I've heard of a few computer companies that have done this.

Grr... Now I have to go and find at least one....
Hmmm... I swear I read about at least one hacker who was hired by some big-name company...
Anyways, a quote from Wikipedia:
QUOTE
White hat hackers, also known as ethical hackers, or white knights, are computer security experts, who specialize in penetration testing, and other testing methodologies, to ensure that a company's information systems are secure. Such people are employed by companies where these professionals are sometimes called "sneakers." Groups of these people are often called tiger teams or red teams. These security experts may utilize a variety of methods to carry out their tests, including social engineering tactics, use of hacking tools, and attempts to evade security to gain entry into secured areas.
Basically, these are hackers who break into a system to stop being from breaking into the same system.

Hmm. I suppose the sentence will be their new motto, and it makes sense that they would TM that. I'm very curious about the hack idol, though. I don't know what to think about it. Sounds interesting, though.

No disrespect to Jagex at all, I'm sure there's a reason behind the secrecy, but I don't know if you've noticed that every question regarding new projects or stuff about SD recieves the same answer, "We can't say." I think pm'ing them would be rather fruitless and wouldn't gain much.
But then again, perhaps they are willing to share something with their fansites.

why does an internet gaming website need to have any secrets at all? Except for maybe their runescript and their game engine code... but some gaming companies just let that all be open source.

Just think about it. The nature of the internet and why businesses don't sharing everything they know to there nearest competitor. I'm also sure that Jagex in general doesn't want to say something and then change their mind the next. It is most likely an idea or concept that they just came up with and decided it was worthy registering.

First of all. How is pming someone rude. Your just asking a question...

secondly, they probably have so much secrecy so the genuses of msw don't go browsing through their files and posting every little thing they find. They so called *leaks* are what they want us to see so we can get all freaked out and figure out what it is for. They are just playing with our minds.
