Full Version: Moving about - Click and go! READ IN 5 SECONDS!
MechScape World > MechScape / Stellar Dawn > MechScape / Stellar Dawn Ideas & Rumours
LordTobytwo
Greetings, mechworlders.

In the mechscape video we saw that you moved using click and go... One thing that we hate in runescape. Boring. Click move, etc. No skill involved with click and go. If Stellar Dawn is gonna own then it needs another dimension. And now I know this.

I have now developed a system in which you may move about while keeping the "qwerty" keys free and without using a uber-complicated mechanics. This system involts the arrow keys, the mouse and ctrl.

It works simply. You move the mouse and whever it goes the camera follows while the arrow keys move your character. The left and right click keys are to select items or people/shoot while ctrl is to jump. Please visualise this.

Also how do you think we shall move? Do you think we shall end up with click and go?

Link to the vid. Note the click and go.

Anyway have fun. smile.gif

That would be terrible. One reason I like RuneScape so much is because of all the mouse control. And if the camera moved every time you moved the mouse, that'd make some people seasick.

Imho, they need to have "click and go" a option.
Garanaw
I wouldn't like "Click and go", but I think SD will have both "Click and go" and WASD movement ...
Someone
You should add option "I don't care."

I love clicking :(

its not that i like it. it is OK, im just used to it. It would feel weird otherwise.
TechnoBulldog
I don't really want purely click and go controls. I mean, I think it would be a good idea to include it, but I would hate if it was all click just like RS. That gets boring enough as it is.
Pipinowns
I am indifferent on whether it's click and go, because I think they'll chose whatever works best for the game.

However, I do think it's going to end up being click and go.
SuperStevee
I want both.
MC
So basically an FPS, but perhaps not in the first person.
Max
I'm a fan of options. Several Dozens of games have it were wasd movement and click and go are possible in the same settings. The simple removing it that you talk anytime you hit a key would free up a lot of keys to be used in the game.

I however believe that it will be simple point and click. Boring stuff but something proven and simple.
Lord John
Really, thought most people won't admit it, the WoW WASD + Enter for chat is the most efficient if you want to have WASD controls. WoW also has mouse movement too if you don't want to use WASD. Definately the way to go.

I think that getting around the runescape mechanic of click and go and be able to type at the same time will be faaar to hard for the Stellar Dawn team to do.

I have a feeling that when we first start SD it will ask us: Do you want the traditional RS click and go or do you want to use the arrow keys to move?

It would give us a choice preferance.
Trizeam
I would like to first say that that video is OBSOLETE! Second, I like both, so it would be cool to have an option. However, there could be certain situations where in PvP one player has an advantage. geek.gif

Having click and go WITHOUT alternative methods of moving WILL make it RuneScape in space. (this is not debatable, explained below)

There's only so much you can do with the click and go method. If you can move around with WASD or the arrow keys, you can position yourself, move backwards while attacking, move smoothly without having to keep clicking, etc... and you won't have to click attack and wait.

You're underestimating the developers...

It's not a question of can they do it, it's a question of will they or will they keep trying to make people play a piece of shit.

kind of off-topic but I believe the video was leaked to see how people would react to it, since everyone with a brain thought it was shit they THEN scrapped the game. If the reaction had been more fanboyish, they would have probably released the POS.

I was thinking that a simple way to do it would be arrow/WASD keys for movement, mouse for face here, as in the Stellar Dawn executable way to play runescape. So when you click somewhere, it faces you in that direction, and then you press forward to move in that direction, use left and right to strafe and use back to walk backwards, though I don't know what Jagex will end up doing.

That's still too cumbersome. Having to click each time for the direction you want to face. If you had WASD movements and the mouse controlled the view (like a normal FPS) it'd be far better.

Having normal controls however, isn't Jagex's speciality as seen in Mobilising Armies where they decided they wouldn't have traditional (sucessful) RTS controls.

Probably right click and hold while moving the mouse would be better then that. It really isn't a very intensive FPS game so could be a lot more relaxed to free up for typing and controls for other functions of the game.

Of course, Jagex should enable several different methods so that everyone gets what they want.

Crap , i acidently clicked YES on both but IMO i would say NO in both , or a BOTH on the second option

Why basic , simple(to me atleast) , and succesful controls :

W = walk fordwards
S = walk backwards
D = walk right
A = walk left
E = Strafe right
Q = strafe left
SPACEBAR = (eat spacepie) JUMP (Onto a spacepie?)
ENTER = begin/publish a chat statement
Hold left mouse key = change view direction
Hold right mouse key = Use item , potion , spacepie ; equip armour , weapons , spacepie ; Do action (example. eating space pie = heals you to your max hp , ap , and reduces all your fatigue (or fills completly in oblivions case)
Hold both mouse keys = to walk
hold and drag both mouse keys = to walk and control direction
scroll bar = control zoom (of map if sitting on MM , of chat if sitting on CB)

I like how Funorb handles chat: Tab key. Enter is often hit, and it has better uses.

WASD controls.
Aves
Simple answer: No to both.

SD is not supposed to be RS in space. Furthermore, I have a feeling that SD will be more reflex-oriented (I'm not too happy... I can't even catch the ruler in those ruler dropping tests), so WASD or similar movement will be used.

Your idea, which is not novel, cannot be the be-all-end-all of SD movement, for any game. Some of us like it, some of us don't. For example, the funorb game Hostile Spawn has an option for an identical control scheme. I tried it, and I found it impossible to use. Others feel the same way about the alternative method.

One idea people have been mentioning is both click-and-go and WASD movement. I don't think that will happen, the two methods are so different, have different advantages and weaknesses and speeds, and just aren't compatible.
LordTobytwo
Hey, liking all the suggestions.

Let me re-format my idea.

Left arrow = Left
Right arrow = Right
Up arrow = Forwards
Down arrow = Backwards

Spacebar = Jump

Mouse = Direct screen OR
WASD = Direct screen

The main issue with this WASD system is free chat without clicking a tab to speak. In funorb my conversations are constanly hampered by bringing this up when talking. I am fine with typing then pressing enter but clicking the tab is something you may forget and sometimes when fighting or ina hurry you just don't even have time to do this.

The problem with arrow keys is that the controls are too cramped.

Your fingers can easily fit on the four arrow keys if you use it with one hand. Not cramped in the slightest.
Aves
The problem is that unless you use your left-hand for a mouse, it gets annoying.
Aslancsc
I think it is assumed that people who are left handed will use their right anyways, that's what my dad and my brother both do. Adapt.

One of the good things with games nowdays is the controls. Take Wii games for example. Mario Kart Wii comes with a wheel frame to put your wii remote in, and you steer by turning the wheel. If it was just click and drag or something, then it would get very boring very quick.

Basicly, I would rather the keyboard got involved with the game, rather than a "click, wait... click again, equip blaster" controls system. If Stellar Dawn does include the keyboard in its controls I hope the gameplay is slightly similar to the tomb raider games (IOW, third person view and 3D gameplay)
