Full Version: Scrap Info Correction
MechScape World > MechScape / Stellar Dawn > MechScape / Stellar Dawn General

I've been seeing alot of posts all the sudden about how jagex is scrapping their mmo. This isn't correct. They Scrapped their previous Version of Mechscape/Stellar Dawn in favor of a New, and hopefully far better version, which will be Stellar Dawn.

Now as for Java and their quest for a revolutionary truly Scifi MMO, Jagex needs to scrap the whole Java crap premise and take the south korean business model, namely, make a reasonably good graphically advanced mmo and make it a free downloadable client.

I think its clear from their never-released-until-now trailer that Java, or atleast their version of Java simply cannot do the things that they want to do with the game. Their Java for the game is taken straight from runescape which obviously lead to the exact same thing in terms of graphics and such, and in some respects the technological and graphical capabilities in the trailer are extremely outdated compared to now.

It was made before RS HD, so I think they can make pretty good graphics with Java ... atleast a lot better than RS graphics.

How the fuck do the korean game companies make any money if thats there buissness model?

Or to be more accurate they are going back to basics and re-imagining the game in a new incarnation but with the ability to keep or build upon any game assets or elements which they like.

Um, what?

I think that's quite wrong. The problems with MechScape were in terms of the gameplay and experience not gelling and not technical limitations. The trailer was in SD mode and pre-RSHD so Stellar Dawn should be able to benefit from great advances in graphics technology while still being browser-based and in Java.

We all know what they are doing here. Scap is just a mataphor. To be honest nobody here cares about the textures and those types of non-needed graphics for it. We care 90% about the actual game. I personally care 95% about the actual game. The graphics can be runescape standard as long as the game is good to play. honestly I think graphics wern;t the issue. the issue is how you play the game with the click method. Clicking and waiting is dull... Very dull. One of the reasons runescape has failed to achieve its full potential. Now imagine a keyboard system. Very had to coordinate been as you can't use the actualy qwerty typing keys been as people want to talk without clicking up a tab. Talking instantly is a priority. Next - The alt keys. These seem good but how can you pilot the arrow keys for the screen move your person and click something at the same time? I want to be able to control this with my hands in 2 places apart from when talking. Using three features with two hands is hard. But then we come the the custom ones like the playstation controllers. How can they make everybody buy one of them? It is endless problem as to how the game FEELS and that is what i think they dislike. Plus the fact space should not be single level. That barrier was broken ages ago and people expecting 3d space will migrate to EVE online which is the leader in space games. SD itself is mainly set on the planet surface like the starwars movies which is a very good reality. The problem is that space then must be made very interesting. Having a boring 2d space is gonna rip off the game. This is not about graphics. Graphics are cosmetic and can be altered alot easier than the core game which they describe which ditates how you control your character and the shape of the game. That is why so much is going to be lost.

Jagex would probbably never make something that isn't browser based on computers, they've said it countless times that they want maximum accesability, as much as i would love to it being client based, that would lose jagex lot's of customers so they wouldn't do it + they are pros at Java, (least most of them) so changing languages would be a bit of a confusing step for some.

to the above post ^ i'm ussualy not that bothered with graphics unless their totally cartoonish and crap but Having played MMO's that aren't browser based, Runescape's graphics look quiet bad, i was expecting Mechscape to have graphics simmilar to EVE online and that old SD video kinda ruined all my imaginations... my first though after like 10 secconds of the video was: RUNESCAPE IN SPACE!

And even the gameplay, they said they were going to have competitors such as EVE, from what was seen in that SD video, MS/SD has nothing to do with spaceships except that you can transform in some little cars which is basicly the same as maging but in a different form.
I realise the video is very very old, but it's still a prototype which means that their ideas at the time was to have a game like that which really is depressing.
