26-Oct-2009 - Web of Shadows

A dark house portal has appeared to the south of Falador once again. Tremble as you approach it, for it leads to the house of the Grim Reaper, Death himself!

In this year's Halloween event, Death has a problem with an uninvited guest. Choose to help out and you will journey to a realm rarely trod by creatures with only two feet, and converse with its irritable monarch.

Completing the event will reward you with two new wearable items €“ one of which has a mind of its own €“ so seek out the house of Death...if you dare!

We've also created a wallpaper based on this event, which you can download here.

Summary:
Where to start Web of Shadows:
Enter the dark house portal south of Falador.

Requirements to complete Web of Shadows:
None

In other news...

We€™ve made some improvements to the way banks calculate your free space. Free-players who used to be members will no longer have to dump all their members items to be able to use their banks and everyone can now see their usage in more detail on the interface. For more information, please read the Controls - Banks page.

We've updated the bank to make it automatically resize to fit your screen better. The interface will automatically extend downwards to show you more of your bank items.

Zahur in Nardah, who's moved to the building east of the bank, will now decant all of your potions (in any combination) into 3-dose vials for you. He charges a small fee for this service to cover the cost of any extra vials needed.

We've swapped two tasks in the Ardougne Achievement Diary. The medium diary might look a little odd if you've already completed it, but you should still be able to wear the cloaks for their effects.

An auto re-pick feature has been added when harvesting your mushrooms, berries and fruit from Farming patches.

When collecting a single item at the Grand Exchange, left-click will now withdraw the actual item and right-click will withdraw it as a note. Withdrawals for multiple items will behave as before.

26-Oct-2009 - Anti 76king measures

As many of you know, since the opening of PvP Worlds, €˜76k€™ing has become a very common practice. We€™ve never been happy about this as we believe it spoils the game experience for players who want to play on PvP Worlds as intended and exhibit their PvP skills, with high rewards for high risks, rather than it being a safe method for earning large amounts of money. Looking at our forums, it looks like many players feel the same way.

Designing and developing a solution to this issue that worked, but which did not lessen the rewards for legitimate kills, turned out to be rather tricky. We€™re hopeful that the solution we€™ve come up with will reduce 76King without having too significant an impact on legitimate PKers.

Players who trade kills will find that the drop they receive is lessened in value. Legitimate PKers might find that some of their kills will result in smaller drops (e.g. when getting revenge on someone who has just killed you), but since you€™ll still only lose as much Earning Potential as is used for the drop, your average drop will stay the same.

Just beat me to posting this Crash. About to do this event, Halloween ftw. biggrin.gif
PoultryChamp
I still hold firmly that they ruined the game when they removed free trade and the old wilderness.

Enjoy the Halloween event. I might pop on and play a little to get the Halloween reward. I haven't for 2 years. bunny.gif
Crash Jordan
Very impressive holiday event. Best I've done so far.

@Poultry, I didn't realize you pked. If anything, I feel those updates have improved the game, in the long run.
dudleyspud
The event was mediocre at best. My favourite update by far is the Adventurer's Log.

I remember you being on like 3 months ago wink.gif

I can't wear the web cape or I'll lose the ability to wear my WC cape!
Lord John
I always log in to get the rewards. It's hilarious how it's now rare to have a yo-yo and rubber chicken!
Man
Good riddance. Prices should go back to normal now.
Aslancsc
76 k is dumbest update ever. all the 76kers will do just kill themselves twice as much... all it does is slow them down by a tiny bit... and discourages friends just pking eachother

The yo-yo, the bunny ears, and the scythe were the only nontradeble ones I didn't get =\
I'd trade in all except my rubber chicken, my trijester hat, and maybe the snowball one for the ears and scythe.
Pliigi
The H'ween event was a bit frustrating, but I like Eek. tongue.gif

Overall, pretty good updates I think.
Ntronic
Bahah.

The 26k update is an absolute joke. Seriously, they're trying to do something NOW? Too late Jagex, 90% of the players who did it are already multimillionaires. This may just be as much of a joke as when they took out the wilderness due to RWT. The damage was already many of years deep, why fix something that had already ruined the value of money. Oh well, it's their game not mine. Hopefully they don't ruin MechScape ermm.gif
Vee3
I had just missed the scythe when I started to play. When i found that out I became sad. I have the yo-yo though D:

This seemed rushed and not planned very well to me.
JJ17400
i love the halloween event and Eek is so so funny :D:D:D

They copied the halloween idea from two years ago, remember when it was in grims house with the agility courses? Same exact thing just spiders instead. (but still agility... but no xp)
Lord John
The really money vending machine is godwars and boss monsters which are now really easy to kill. Plus fixed prices don't help. The 76k thing is kind of dumb and doesn't look like it'll be that effective.

Get a bunch of 4 people and rotate each time someone dies. You do the 76k as always and get better loot.
killrrhubarb
Just in case anyone hasn't done the quest yet, the prize is a web cape and Eek the spider. You also get all the previous Halloween emotes, including the zombie claw dodge and the zombie walk, scared and bat around you one. Pretty good reward for a kinda easy quest.

Fixed. I just played, and I've got to say, I don't like it. I've played each and every H'ween event, so all I got was a boring spider and a cape. I totally liked last years, because you could actually enjoy it the entire period of days.

We got from last year: Draynor, Rimmy, and Port Sarim fully redesigned for Halloween, a broom that gives up to 20k xp free, teleports you to the one garden, full warlock/witch, 10k xp in drinks, etc, and an emote.

I didn't like it either... the only good thing is spider emote, but that's hard to see and gets old fast. I'm thinking that the xmas event might be huge.

Yeah. I just remembered that the house from 07 was practically this re-arranged. If X-Mas isn't huge then I'm going to be an unhappy member.
Rohonora
I wanted a full grim reaper outfit.. to go with my grim reaper hood and scythe!

I found my scythe in Dranor manor btw.. when i was still Lvl 62!
Hayaemsay
This event felt more like a chore than any previous events.
Crash Jordan
I dunno why people didn't like it.

It was really fun, and it was cool to explore the spider world
Alex
I would have to agree. Jagex have had some cracking stuff come out, there was a strip from about Christmas 05 (where the modern quest-type holiday event came out with Diango's workshop) to last Christmas where all the quests and rewards were pretty solid, with the exception of Christmas 06 which was crap.

This year's event has been pretty good but it was overly laggy and annoying. The Spider Queen crashed me for no apparent reason and it was a pain to click on the furniture to web, plus it got boring after a while rather than easier. It would have been okay if the rewards had justified the falling about in the Spider's Lair and the webbing, but a tacky cape and a spider which doesn't do anything didn't impress me. Seriously, that cape is awful.

Now, had the spider been a proper pet that followed you around, I'd have been happy as Larry, but as it is there's no decent wieldable reward, nor an emote. This means that the event is equivalent to the zombie head event, which was literally "talk to a zombie then pick his head up" in terms of difficulty.

Overall, it was a fun little escapade but the rewards didn't live up to the difficulty, and it was annoying at times.

Now, what happened to the holiday quests? As in, quests that actually give rewards in XP?

To be honest I wonder if we don't see an actual quest come out later this week. I recall them saying in an old BTS that they would always release a quest and an event from now on. As far as I know, web of shadows was either a quest or an event.

Yo so I haven't played RuneScape in like four years. What exactly is 76king, hmm?

QUOTE
76k or '76k'ing (formerly '25k'ing) refers to a PKing technique in a PvP world in which two players trade killing each other as a safe method for earning large amounts of money.

75k is the minimum worth of items a player needs to risk in order to obtain high rewards with PKing. This was intended to reward players to exhibit their
PvP skills with high rewards for high risk. (See Death and Drops (Loot).

In '76k'ing, each players brings at least 75k in coins as well as any other item (which makes the total worth rounded up to equal 76k) so that both meet the criteria of staking a high amount in order to obtain a good drop. They each take turns killing each other to obtain good drops with little risk.
Jagex released Update:Anti-'76k'ing Measures on 26 October 2009 to address this issue.

the event was a little short.... ermm.gif
(didn't Jagex say it was going to be something big?) confused.gif
Neven
Jagex has no good ideas anymore when it comes to Holiday events. The only good Holiday items were those that happened back in RSC, period.
Lord John
I personally enjoyed the last Christmas and Halloween events where they also released a quest alongside the event. Those were great. It does seem like they kind of rushed this one, though I still enjoyed it.

EDIT: Neven, you serious? RSC ones could barely be called events. You just picked items off the ground not realising in 5 years they'd be millions. I personally love these events because for once your alongside other players having fun instead of being opposed to them. I go to worlds with a normal amount of players just so I can interact with other players during these events before logging out until Christmas ;)
Wege
Christmas 2005 is and will always be the best event I've ever done. This one was good, but last years was lots better because you could still see the decorations after you've done the actual event, as posted on the previous page.
scifire
I enjoyed the event this year. I think I liked last year's more, but this was fun. I took my time and read everything and explored. Eek is very cool. I think I read you can put him in your menagerie. Can't wait to see him there.

My first Halloween was the zombie head one with the kids in Lumby and the swamp for trick-or-treating.

Playing alongside other players doesn't actually work well for this particular quest-event as we are all performing the exact same errand which has already been completed by another player before us.
Egg
Meh, thought the event was about average. And I liked the snow imp better than the spider.

Me too!

If Eek could follow me, I would have him, but he can't, so he's less cool than the imp.

It was an event. I was personally looking forward to a quest such as the one for Christmas 2008 too. Eek is alright, but I wish we could have the snow imp out always, instead of going to the Christmas land every time I want to see him. I wonder if there is going to be a thanksgiving event this year, like last year...
jmb
Eek went straight into the menagerie and the cape went straight into the toy box never to be reclaimed again...

The imp from last year should be released this xmas and allowed to be kept in the menagerie, there was a lot of people upset they weren't allowed to keep the imp, why? Well i think its because they were named individually, and so people became more attached to them.

As for this halloween event, well 64 was far too many cobwebs to be placing, it got a bit old in the middle, and I definitely used the shortcuts to and from the spider queen each time i had to visit her as those agility things were odd to say the least.

Agreed with the poster who preferred last year when towns were decked out with halloween trim. That could surely have been turned on this year by just using the old graphics?
