Full Version: Pipins Movies to Watch in 2009
MechScape World > Community > Off Topic
Pipinowns
As you can tell from the topic description, I don't exactly expectt a lot of people to post here, mainly because of the lack of film buffs we have on these forums, however, I still felt like I might as well get some advice from the few film buffs we do have.

Anyways, I'm not sure if anyone noticed this, but throughout this year, I have been editing a list of mine from an old thread pretty consecutively. What I'm posting now is a more organized version of the list (it now has pretty colors and sexy smilies), that I decided to post as a thread so I didn't have to keep searching to find the old thread.

Also, if anyone is curious as to why I have ratings for all the movies I've seen so far, it's for the Film General boards on IMDb, so you can ignore it if you want. And just FYI, the list isn't as no-life as it appears. I'm fairly certain that I won't finish all these movies within the year (I'm mostly just trying to finish all the quests), and the ones I don't finish will most likely be put on my 2010 list.

Anyways, recommendations for movies to add to the list/remove from the list/watch ASAP would be appreciated. Feel free to post whatever the fuck you feel like posting...

*Attention*

Seeing as 2009 is over, the list begins anew in 2010

You have Blade Runner twice.
You must make Blade Runner and Dark City top priority.
Crash Jordan
I made a list too recently, and it featured quite a few of those.

I highly recommend The Scent of a Woman. Also Pulp Fiction.
Hayaemsay
You will watch The Iron Giant, and you will like it.
killrrhubarb
Some great movies there, good choice, I might go and see some of those.

My favorites from the list:
  • Requiem For a Dream -
  • The Life Aquatic - This didn't really hit me that It was good until I got done watching it and then I wanted to watch It again. I liked it alot.
  • American Beauty
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • 28 Days Later - This wasn't that great of a movie, but It really got me into zombies and all that jazz.
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
  • Spirited Away - I loved the uniqueness of this.
  • American History X - Hated the ending, but reaalllly good movie.
  • American Psycho - Great movie. The way Christian Bale acts makes the guy seem perfect and I liked that a lot.

I haven't watched most of these on your list though.

I'm going to try and watch from the list:
Twin Peaks - I keep putting it off, but i'll eventually watch it.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
    Carnivale
    John from Cincinnati
    Eyes Wide Shut
Blade Runner - Watched the beginning and just didn't feel like watching it, I'll try again.
    Blue Velvet
    Mulholland Dr.
    Lost Highway
    The Machinist
    Pans Labyrinth
    Good Will Hunting

Movies I don't think you've watched you might like.
The Fountain - It has some amazing effects and cool story.
No country for old men - One of those great man-hunt villain movies.
    Snow Angels
    Garden State
SgtGumbo
THERE WILL BE BLOOD

and "no country for old men"

"oh brother where art thou" is hilarious

Donnie Darko (I think you'll like that one, although the normal version makes difficult sense of it)

thinking of more..

Also "Taken" was actually a pretty intense thriller/action movie too, better than whatever else is out there nowadays

Drag Me To Hell! : ) Horror as hell!

I've seen Pulp Fiction (the only Tarantino movie I haven't seen is Jackie Brown)

Haven't seen or heard of The Scent of a Woman. It sounds intriguing enough, though wink.gif

I love The Iron Giant! I watched that over and over again as a kid.

I keep getting Spirited Away recommendations, but the trailer makes it look like a cheesy kids movie. I did see the movie at my school library, though, so I'll probably just get it for free.

Carnivale, Eyes Wide Shut, Mulholland Dr., and Twin Peaks (show and movie) should all be made a top priority. John From Cincinnati is also great, but it's pretty weird.

Also, you may want to add Inland Empire. My sister told me it's the best Lynch movie, although I haven't seen it yet (I'm saving it).

I've seen all of those except Snow Angels. I'll look into that one.

By the way, what did you think of Garden State? It's one of my favorites, but it seems like most people just write it off as a pretentious indie movie, when it definitely isn't confused.gif

I've seen all of those, but yes, I LOVE Donnie Darko. It's actually my favorite movie of all time. There Will Be Blood and No Country are both amazing. I was disappointed by O'Brother, simply because it was nowhere near as good as The Big Lebowski, and I didn't really like Taken, either.

Have you watched Treasure Planet? It's not of the same caliber, but STEAMPUNK SPACE PIRATES ARE AWESOME.

I have, actually.

It's pretty good for an animated movie. Not as awesome as Iron Giant, though.
Dizzy
Drag Me to Hell isn't very scary, or that gorey. The movie is somewhat goofy and not very serious, but it's very true to demon nature (you will see what I mean when you see the movie).

My own personal rating of Drag Me to Hell is 7/10. It's worth watching, for sure.
Max
I don't think I've seen any listed.
killrrhubarb
I noticed you have The Thing on here. It's a pretty great movie, considering how old it is, though you kinda figure out how the story is going to go right at the start. It contains a lot of blood, if you like that stuff.
Stellar

Hah don't be mislead by trailers. I stopped judging movies by trailers a long time ago (look at how inglorious basters was advertised with brad pitt and lots of action).
Spirited Away isn't really that much of a kids movie at all. It's not Ponyo or anything like that :p

11. The Wrestler -- Don't take it off your list. It was a really good movie.
19. Se7en -- Again, it was a good movie. Well worth it.
40. Boondock Saints -- If you haven't seen it yet, I'd watch it soon. It is good :)
46. Synecdoche, New York -- Was amazing! In fact I plan on watching it again soon.
60. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -- We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.
65. Trainspotting -- It was pretty good.
67. Ed Wood -- Watch it :)

I saw a lot of good movies on your list. Some of them I am still wanting to see. You'll enjoy them all :)
Mcharger
Keep the Wrestler on your list, It's pretty good.

As far as your TV shows, you absolutely positively must watch Band of Brothers. One of my favorite TV series of all time, and it really makes you appreciate what veterans did for our country. It's gory, but there's tons of action and drama, and you get attached to the characters really quickly, but it's kind of annoying when they die after you start to like them. If you like history, you will like Band of Brothers.
Dean
I can't believe you haven't already seen #36, Pip. You disappoint me.
Alex
Where is Soylent Green?
Dean
#11 is another really awesome flick. Not exactly a feel good one, but a damn good film. You don't even have to be a wrestling fan to enjoy it.

It's not really a movie I've ever been recommend before. I've heard of it, but I heard that it wasn't that good.

Darren Aronofsky is a excellent director, but the trailer looked melodramatic as hell.

Go watch Good Will Hunting and American History X RIGHT NOW!

Has Pipin/anyone ever seen this really obscure movie called "The Last Trapper" about some trapper in the artic, I think it's a psychological movie. Just wondering if it's worth anything.

sort of related, did you ever see"Into the Wild"?

I thought it was a little miffy but I don't want to ruin it for everybody either.

I own Into the Wild, but I haven't watched it, mainly because my sister already spoiled it for me, and she said it sucked. However, I did hear from many people that it was good, so I might give it a chance.

Also, as for The Last Trapper, it is indeed very obscure, as it is a french documentary. I haven't seen too many foreign movies, or documentaries, and very few mixtures of the two.
MC
I liked Good Will Hunting. I watched it in my brain class. It's a good movie in its own right, but even better when all the psychology and brain aspects of it are broken down because the movie is very accurate.
Ntronic
Skimmed over the movies on your list and I saw a few that I really enjoyed

I will give my reviews on them as soon as I get a little more free time!
Zheph
Over the past year and a half I have actually become quite a movie-head. I've been seeing one movie every week on tuesday, as long as there are 'good' movies out. There's usually spikes of good ones and those are the times I enjoy the most. I've also started watching other movies from before my movie time with my movie-head friend living across the road.
Can I recommend Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? One of my favourite movies.
Man
You need to watch 28 Days Later, seriously. And I'm glad you finally got around to watching Fanboys, that movie was fuckin retarded.

@ #75 yes.gif

#14 was pretty great too.

Don't you dare remove spaced from the list! Add dr who to it aswell. biggrin.gif

I've seen Dr. Who, can't wait for the special that's coming up in a few weeks yes.gif

Also, yeah, I'm keeping Spaced. Not sure why I was going to remove it.

Also, not sure if anyone noticed, but I only have 60 movies left. Yay!

I like your Trainspotting ava, Urantis yes.gif

By the way, don't bother with The Machinist. It kind of sucked,
SgtGumbo
Oh dude, I just watched "Orphan"

It's a far better movie than I expected, nice filming and actor/actress choices, I refuse to ruin the story again though.

Do eet.
