Hey, guise. I need some help again. This time I'm using Monroe's motivational sequence to try to convince a company to hire me, and I'm not sure what to put down for the attention getting statement. The rest of the process seems easy. I haven't decided on the job I want yet. I thought I dream job, like Vacation Tour Director at the bottom of the page would be fun.

Attention - ???
Establish need - You need someone for a Vacation Tour Director position.
Satisfy need - I satisfy this need because I have job experience, I'm friendly, etc.
Visualization - If you hired me, life would be great. Your customers would love me, you'd make millions!, etc.
Call to action - Please consider me for the position / Will you hire me?

Ravenholm: If you can sell people on that destination you're hired!

How to get attention:
1. "Hello, I'm not an axe murderer and I'd like a job at your company".
2. "Pi is exactly 3!"
3. "SEX! ...Now I've got your attention, please listen to my pitch..."

In anycase, I cannot help you with this... I, however, wish you on the best of luck...

I don't think you exactly need a call to attention, because you establish the need and that's sort of the call to attention in itself. A call to attention that you both have needs (you need a job, they need a tour director).

You NEVER want to start a speech off with, "Hello, my name is Lord John, and I'm going to tell you why I'm good for this job position". It's boring and makes people want to ignore you.

You want the audience to be on the edge of their seats, waiting to hear the next word that comes out of your mouth, and you can do this in an essay or a speech by starting off with a question, interesting fact, or by telling a short story relevant to the topic to get them interested.

The problem I'm having is: "How am I going to get their attention?"

If it were a real job position, I'd read the employer's website and get their attention by showing them I've read their page and tell them I have some great ideas for their company in 2010.

If it were my class, I'd probably start with a joke that the majority of the class would find humorous or tell a story and tie it into my speech.

Merge these two together, which is what my teacher wants, (my classmates are the people who are "hiring" me), and I don't have any ideas.

Tell a funny joke about the website that they don't have and the ideas you don't have about the company.

Genuine suggestion, start off in Billy May's style.

If I was a CEO and was looking to hire someone and they came in to an interview and started off Billy May's style...I would hire them on the spot.

Sure, maybe I'd have to fire them the next week - but still. Billy May's is my hero. He yells and people listen.

You don't have an audience. Your in a job interview; not a theatre. They want to know why you are better than every other candidate out there not what you did on the weekend or why you like the colour blue. Starting off with something random is more likely to get you ignored, not noticed.

As long as you speak confidently and proficiently and display to them your qualifications then you are more likely to get the job. What's with the "I need to do something to get their attention" anyway?

When is the interview anyway? I'd be interested to hear how it goes biggrin.gif
EDIT: Oh... So this is an "If I was going for this job I would say..." not an actual interview :S
